Two separate drowning incidents have claimed as many lives.
In Amherst County Saturday night - authorities say 12-year-old Tiara (tee-AIR-uh) Dillard of Lynchburg wandered out too far in the James River at Monacan (monicun) Park and went under at about 7 p-m.
3 teenagers tried to save her, but were not successful.
And in Giles County - 31-year-old Harold Coker (coke-er) of Tazewell slipped on a rock at Shumate Falls in the Glenlyn community yesterday morning.
He fell into the water and apparently could NOT swim.
A bystander pulled Coker from the water... but he died at the scene.

A story about the resignation of a pastor from a Salem church created a storm of viewer mail.

(( The story about the Reverend Mike Slaughter's decision to tell his congregation at West Salem Baptist Church that he had an affair and would resign brought us several phone calls and notes.
Just about everyone thought we were wrong.
I thought that your story on Michael Slaughter was unnecessary and hurtful to the parties involved. I don't know how the story came to you, don't you think it was a highly personal thing that did not need to be broadcast on the local news...think of his family's feelings.
I want you to know how much I disapprove of your making a local news report about this resignation. I do not believe this is anything but sensationalism and certainly does nothing to enhance our trust in your news department. I believe that this matter was, and should have been between Reverend Slaughter and his congregation.
I have always regarded your program as above average, quite professional for the area and on other stations I would not have been a bit surprised. To broadcast such a story, however, leaves me cold. Yes, Mr. Slaughter was wrong, yet I feel deeply for his family and his church and I think your actions in running this story did nothing to offset their pain.
I was dismayed when I heard your report on the pastor at West Salem Baptist Church. This was not news...it was an attack on a situation similar to gossip. Other stations in the Valley have taken events to the point of sensationalism. You have entered their arena with this story.
