Health officials are trying to solve a mystery- Hikers on the Appalachain trail in our area have become ill.
The hikers have come down with a bug known as the Norwalk virus.

Health Check reporter Tonya Flory is in Catawba to explain more about how the virus is rapidly spreading and making hikers sick.

Jean -- The Norwalk virus is common at summer camps, any place groups get togther and share food and water.
And it's highly contageous -- so even though the Health department hasn't pin pointed the source of the contamination, wells at two local stores are being tested and that's enough to keep some hikers away.

[GRAPHIC=Death Penalty]
It's an unusual move for Virginia's Supreme Court -- and a direct result of a landmark ruling last week.
With just five hours to spare, the Virginia Supreme Court has halted the execution of Douglas Christopher Thomas.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Middlesex Co./1990;]
Thomas actually pled guilty to killing his girlfriend's father when he was just 17 years old.
His 14-year old girlfriend spent seven years in jail as an accomplice to her parents' murders.
It was the murder of the mother that made Thomas eligible for the death penalty.
James and Kathy Wiseman were killed in their Northern Neck home.
A tabloid show later called the crime scene "the house of blood."
This afternoon, Chris Thomas' lawyers reminded the state Supreme Court of a ruling it made last week.
(------------)
[TALENT=Jean ]
[SS=None]
In that ruling, the Virginia high court decided that notifying only one parent before trying a juvenile defendant is NOT sufficient.
It could overturn thousands of juvenile cases in Virginia-- and it's the reason for today's stay of Thomas' case.
The stay only halts the execution for tonight, until the Supreme Court can consider the case again.

The F-D-A approved a new test could dramatically improve how doctors care for diabetics.
The test provides the first continuous measurements of a patient's glucose level.
In the system, a sensor is implanted just under the skin in the abdomen. It remains there for three days as it records glucose levels every five minutes.
A computer downloads the record for a doctor's analysis.
The system is made by MiniMed and is availible only by prescription.
The F-D-A says the method will not replace finger-prick blood samples, but it will help doctors adjust treatments.
