Virginia's Republican Party will hold a presidential primary in February.
State Republicans voted overwhelmingly today in Richmond to hold a primary on February 29, 2000.
Previously officials picked their delegates atlocal and statewide meetings with party leaders.
in a primary, registered voters will be able to vote for the nominee of their choice.
A February primary should make Virginia one of the first five states to endorse a candidate.
Party officials hold that will give Virginia more influence in the presidential nominating process.[Covered-Bridges

"Covered Bridge Day" was celebrated in Virginia day-- for the first time in nearly three decades.
While many of us have never even heard of the holiday before , it's a big day for Newport.
The Giles County community has THREE of the historic bridges within just a few miles.
Kimberly McBroom has more.

Link's Farm Bridge was built over Sinking Creek in 19-12 and sits on private property.
Legend has it that the bridge was constructed when the first vehicle on its way to Mountain Lake, stalled here.

Thanks to an active older population in Newport...all three covered bridges in the area are well maintained and still functional.
These landmarks also help "bridge" the gap between generations of local residents...

It's probably no surprise that the scenic bridges have inspired local artist Robert Tuckwiller to create prints of them, sold all over the world.

((The proposal to rename Orange Avenue after Martin Luther King, Jr. upset businessman Matt Whitcomb. And he was roundly criticized by a black community leader, for suggesting that the new name would imply his company was in a black neighborhood.
"Before these 'black rights' groups start to complain, maybe they should go to some of these black neighborhoods and see what they're like. There's broken glass on the sidewalks, trash in vacant lots, ill kept buildings and crowds of people just standing around. Starting and running a business requires a lot of money. This man is only looking out for his investment. That's not being racist, that's being a smart businessman."
Another viewer from Vinton wrote:
"I feel that the man himself, King, was a great man, but as I am white I feel that it would be very discriminatory towards whites in Roanoke and all over Virginia and the United States. If it is approved to name a major street in such a populated area as Roanoke I feel that it should also be approved to rename a few other major streets after white leaders, such as Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson."
The controversy over the Lee mural at Richmond's Canal Walk prompted several comments.
"As a family researcher I am appalled at the attempt of certain groups to erase things from our past. The state song is one example, the rebel flag is another and now Robert E. Lee of all things. What will be next?"
"We may as well forget George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, heaven forbid, they owned and used slaves. Isn't this all a part of our history? Who cares what color or race a person is, we all have the heritage of being Virginians and above all Americans."
"It seems to me that the people who are so narrow minded that they wished the removal of the picture of a great man are the ones who are acting like Hitler and his Nazis. Was it not Hitler that had the books burned and rewrote the history of Germany? This must not be allowed to happen."
