Light rain cannot fill Roanoke's water needs.
So, the city is now tapping into the water supply of Roanoke County, Salem and Vinton.

Carvins Cove is more than 22 feet below the spillway.
But a new agreement will cut the burden on the cove in half.
Roanoke is pulling two and a half million gallons a day from Salem and Roanoke County.
New pipes should be in by August -- then the county and Vinton will run even more water to the city.
Citizens are still being asked to conserve water -- if the drought continues, the city will impose mandatory restrictions within three weeks.

While the Amherst sheriff's department searched the buildings, students were kept on these buses for more than two hours.

We're still getting a lot of mail about our coverage of the resignation of the pastor of West Salem Baptist Church.

((Almost all of the comments we received, more than we can cite on the air, were along these lines:
"By allowing such a story to air, you have become no better than the tabloid magazines and television programs I refuse to read and watch. Rev. Slaughter is not my pastor, nor am I a member of his faith, but I believe every person deserves privacy in matters such as these."
A fellow clergyman also disagreed that this was news. But he had a slightly different viewpoint.
"I do not recall any news report by WQDJ on the positive ministries that West Salem Baptist Church has been involved in our community, and there have been many positive and good ministries that this Church has contributed to the residents of the Roanoke Valley. I will continue to watch your news programs because I believe an honest judgment by the news editors was made, but I do expect to start seeing some positive reporting on the ministries, activities and churches that contribute to the residents of the Roanoke Valley."
And a Christiansburg viewer applauded our coverage.
"I think your coverage of Reverent Slaughter's resignation was appropriate and newsworthy. As a minister of the Gospel he is a public servant and open to scrutiny just as our mayor or anyone else in the public eye. Did you not report also that his spouse had forgiven him? Not once did I hear sensational wording or any bias on your part. Please keep up the good work you do as an excellent source of news."
