Dan River Incorporated announced this morning it is donating 13 buildings that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s to the Danville Historical Society.
The mills have been empty since workers left them in 1996.
They were set to be leveled until public outcry prompted the company to donate them for tax credits.
Developers envision turning the area into a commercial district that will house shops, apartments, offices and museums.

Three minors escaped from the New River Valley Detention Center around midnight, but they're all back in custody after an early-morning chase.
Police say they tried to stop a car the juveniles were in, but the vehicle took off.
Two of the teens were nabbed at the Kroger Distribution Center in Salem. Roanoke County police later arrested the third.
All three were returned to the detention center and face charges of escape and larceny.

The Virginia Lottery Board says that sales this year are expected to be the highest they've seen in the agency's eleven year history. Just last week a federal study on gambling found that it could be damaging to individuals and communities.
The study suggested reforms such as raising the legal age from 18 to 21 and controlling advertising. State lottery officials say the industry here is different.

New Jersey school children may have to recite the Declaration of Independence without referring to "men".
