A 20-percent tuition cut at Virginia Tech and the state's other public colleges and universities may NOT feel like much help to students and parents this fall.
A new state report released this week shows that tuition is only about a third of what students pay each year .. after room, board, and fees are added together.
And several state colleges raised those NON-tuition costs this year.
State lawmakers are now pledging new efforts to cut tuition even more, in light of the new report.

Some "stupid, silly words" in the aftermath of the Columbine shootings managed to get a 16-year old student convicted today of making a bomb threat at Patrick Henry High School.
It happened April 26th, the week after Columbine.

[SUPER=03-Roanoke]

Penn Hall had already been evacuated for a bomb scare once that day.
As Spanish Teacher Leslie Cleveland was returning to her classroom with the students, Woodson asked her: "Has your room blown up, yet?" She indicated it hadn't, and then- -by HER account, Woodson said: "Well, it's going to."
Woodson denies making the second remark.
An hour later the building was evacuated a second time.

HIS attorney says the "silly words" of a 16-year old don't amount to criminal conduct.
Judge Joe Clarke agreed that Woodson's words were foolish and insensitive. But more than that- -in the "atmosphere" after Columbine, Judge Clarke concluded Woodson not only disrupted classes, but was guilty of making a bomb threat, a felony.
Woodson's already been expelled from school for a YEAR, so the judge postponed a decision on additional punishment.
