Virginia Military Institute expels one it s top cadets for allegedly demanding sex from three female freshman.
Jerry B. Webb, the second, was dismissed last month during the last week of school.
Only a short time before he had been chosen to serve as the regimental commander of the Corp of Cadets for the upcoming year.
Joy Sutton has the story.

And during a press conference at the May graduation VMI Superintendent Major General Josiah Bunting even agreed that the assimilation process had been going well, making no indication that there were any problems.

Even VMI Roanoke Alumni President Timothy Cordle had NOT heard about the incident before we mentioned to him.
And he was very upset to hear what had occurred.

Bunting told the associated press that this doesn't mean there is a widespread problem and that the quick dismissal of the student shows the school procedures for reporting misconduct are effective.
However, this isn't the first time sexual misconduct has occurred at VMI.
In March of 1998 a male and female student were caught in a sexual encounter...both were confined to the barracks for the remainder of the school year and part of the next year.
In May of 1998 a male student was dismissed for having a sexual relationship with a female exchange student.
However, in both of these incidents, the conduct was consensual.

Federal officials are trying to explain how U.S. Patrol Agents caught serial killer suspect Rafael Resendes Ramirez earlier this month, and let him go.

Ramirez was arrested as an illegal alien in El Paso, Texas, he was photographed and finger printed... and then deported back to Mexico.
Agents didn't know who Ramirez was, because the INS does not routinely run it's suspects through the FBI computer system.

Authorities say Gene Gaylor and another man planted the bomb in Greenbrier County, West Virginia.
The bomb killed Billy Ray Abshire , and Gaylor was reportedly hired by Abshire's wife.
He is the first of the defendants to stand trial in connection with the murder.
He was convicted earlier this month, and sentenced to life in prison yesterday.

3 women and a man dove out of a helicopter just outside of Beijing and landed on a section of the Great Wall that is one of the most heavily- frequented by tourists.

More than 30 riders would challenge the tight ring for the big purse. The Civic Center crowd would once again cheer for two time defending champion Aaron Vale. Vale aboard Areco had a perfect round in the jump off to win his third straight Grand Prix at the event.

He wins 50 thousand dollars for the effort.
Todd Minikus was second behind Vale. He had 3 of the 8 horses in the final jump off.

Roanoke would get on the board first as McSorley takes the ball and works it to the right of the goal for the first of his three scores and Roanoke led the Sharks 1 to nothing.

Franklin County showed off one of its latest accomplishments yesterday.
The county dedicated the new track at the high school to former principal Bruce Kent.

Kent is credited with creating the first track at the school.
In '94 Franklin County residents approved a bond referendum which included money to upgrade that track.
And this is the result--an all-weather, 400 meter facility.
Construction was completed last fall.

There's a tie for the lead after round one of the Linwood Ladies Invitational in Martinsville.
Roanoke's Dot bolling shot a 1 under par 71 to share the lead with Millie Witt. Mary Ann Hedgpeth and Fran Hensley share second place at 74 and Jessica Witcher is next at 75.
Michael Grant is the pro leader at the Greater Blacksburg Open. He shot 67, 5 under. Dickie Linkous is second at 69.
