Authorities now say Benjamin Smith first shot himself in the chin as he was being pursued by police in southern Illinois last night.
As he struggled with the officers, Smith shot himself twice more -- in the leg and the chest, slicing through several organs.
He bled to death, the coroner says.
Smith was in a hijacked minivan, having ditched the blue Ford Taurus he allegedly used to shoot at minorities in Illinois and Indiana over the weekend.
