More than an inch of rain has fallen in the Carvins Cove watershed during the last 24 hours.
And this afternoon, water was flowing from Catawba Creek into one of the tunnels that feeds Roanoke's main reservoir.
Today's rainfall isn't expected to have a major impact on the city's water problem, but it may help to slow the rate at which the water level is falling.

A head-on collision in Bedford County tonight -

The crash occurred around 7-30 when a Chevy crossed the center line on Goodview Road, then struck a Honda and flipped.
There were no passengers in either car, but both drivers are at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

Police DO know what caused a fatal accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd County.
They says excessive speed and a wet road caused a North Carolina man to lose control of his pickup in a curve and hit a tree.
Driver James Johnson died.
His wife and grandson escaped from the truck when a passer-by broke the windshield with a hammer.

Garland Spangler will NOT lose his job as prosecutor.
The Giles County Commonwealth's attorney had been in danger of losing his law license after a state bar investigation into misconduct.

This morning, a three judge panel granted Spangler's request for a "public reprimand" in order to avoid a trial.
The investigation found that since taking office Spangler has missed the speedy trial deadline in two cases.

Spangler's attorney, Roberts Moore, indicated his client was NOT incompetent saying the paperwork was simply overlooked.

A physician at Lewis Gale Hospital is on trial in federal court for allegedly falsifying her tax returns.

The major leagues all-star game takes center stage in the sports world in Boston tonight.
But last night the joint was jam packed for the annual homerun derby contest.

Most in attendance came to see baseball's homerun king Mark McGwire. Last year he was a major disapointment in this event hitting just four and failing to advance past the first round.
Last night he put on a clinic in the first round hitting an event record 13 homers.
First time all-star Billy Wagner, the former Ferrum star couldn't help but smile at the outburst.
Sammy Sosa wasn't as fortunate. He failed to make it past the first round.
The big surpprise was Jeromy Burnitz of the Milwaukee Brewers. He advanced to the finals where he eventually lost to defending champ Ken Griffey Junior.
Junior and McGwire both finished with 16 homers, but Griffey hit them when they counted.

Terry Holland has spoken with the University of Minnesota's athletic director Mark Dienhart about becoming the Gol
den Gophers new head basketball coach, but it's not likley he will get the job or take it if offered at this time.
While it's obvious Holland is still intrigued by the possibility of coaching again don't look for him to leave UVa for the Twin Cities.

In fact, it now looks like Minnesota has re-intensified its effort to lure Tommy Amaker away from Seton Hall.
The afternoon edition of the St. Paul Pioneer Press says Minnesota is ready to offer Amaker a seven year $7 millio
n dollar contract.
Amaker played and coached at Duke before going to Seton Hall in 1997.

And one of Holland's former assistants Dave Odom, the current head coach at Wake Forest is also being mentioned as a candidate to replace Clem Haskins.

Tomorrow night, the WNBA will pay its first ever all-star game, and last night's the Msytics got 26 from all-star Nikki McCray as they beat the struggling Charlotte Sting 74-to-71.

Another struggling team got its act together last night as the Phoenix Mercury snapped a six game losing streak and beat the Utah Starz on the road at the Delta Center in Sale Lake City.
The Mercury had not won a game since June 26th but last night the team whips Utah by 14 - 80-to-66.

Tim Duncan scored nine points last night in the blowout win over Canada, but he gave everyone a scare when he came down hard on another player's foot and sprained his left ankle.

Cave Spring head softball coach Lynn Saunders died yesterday after battling liver cancer most of this year.

Saunders helped coach every type of team from little league to college in the area for the past 25 years.
During his days at Cave Spring he worked as an assistant under Fuzzy Minnix before taking over the Lady Knights team as head coach.
Ironically, it was Minnix, now a member of the County Board of supervisors, who spearheaded the movement to have Field Number one at Penn Forest Park renamed Lynn Saunders field last month.
Saunders is survived by his wife, two children, and hundreds of his former players. He was 56 years old.

And for more than 30 years H-L Jackson has been there to start the youngsters off right.
He organizes these tournaments for one reason.

The rain caused a few problems, instead of playing 18 holes, the 13 to 18 year old golfers played 12 holes and parents were allowed to caddy, but not instruct.
This is Jackson's 31st Valley Junior, but he spent the past three decades teaching more than golf.
