The proposal brought out hard feelings tonight as the Roanoke planning commission heard from all sides- and decided on its recommendation.
Kate (Why-daw) Weidaw was there she joins us from Orange Avenue to tell us what happened.
The meeting room tonight was filled with supporters, opponents, business-owners and residents.
But the majority of people speaking to the commision asked them not to change Orange Avenue's name. The final decision turned out to be a surprise.

Carson Hurley a business owner along Orange Avenue he says he and other businesses can't afford the cost of changing signs and letter heads. Several residents and businessnessowners agreed with him. Supporters of the change like Evelyn Davis Bethel were shocked to see so much opposition.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference thought up the idea of the name change, they say concerns about money are just an excuse.

But to the surprise of many the planning commission took their own approach by recommending to the city council adopt a doul name of Orange Avenue slash Martin Luther King Avenue.))
The president of the SCLC said she came to tears during the meeting tonight because she didn't know there was so much racism in Roanoke.

He shot a Henry County man in front of his infant granddaughter.
Now Clyde Howard Junior will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Howard showed little emotion as he was sentenced to two life terms and 83 years in prison.
He pleaded no contest to shooting 56-year old James Taylor in the head, as Taylor sat in his pickup with his two-year old granddaughter.

Howard was captured after a six-day manhunt last December.
Today, Howard apologized to Taylor's family in a statement, read by his lawyer.

Taylor's family members said they were relieved to have the sentencing behind them.

Three years after the Valujet Crash - murder charges are filed against the company responsbile for maintaining the plane.

Cost estimates for two projects have risen, and are now millions of dollars higher than county officials had expected.

((The road to a new south county high school has been a bumpy one, as the county has searched for a site and wrestled with the financing.
And it appears more difficult decisions are ahead.
The estimated cost of the high school is now at least five point seven million dollars more than budgeted.
Add four and half million dollars more for the Glenvar Middle School project, and the pricetag for school improvements is climbing fast.

Bob Johnson says he remains confident that the high school will be built... the Glenvar improvements and that other school construction projects will come to pass... but with cost estimates rising, it now appears that all of those projects will be re-evaluated.

William Fleming High School has a new principal.
The Roanoke School Board gave the position to (HAL-ee) Hallie Carr this afternoon.
The board also reorganized it's own leadership... Melinda Payne was elected chairman, and Webster Day was chosen as Vice Chairman.

Virginia's Attorney General is trying a new attack on New York City garbage.
That's after two federal courts stopped Virginia's new trash laws from taking effect this month.
This afternoon, Attorney General Mark Earley filed a federal lawsuit against New York City.
It alleges New York has "distorted" interstate commerce by discouraging and preventing waste haulers from dumping its trash within New York state borders.
Authorities think they know what sparked the deadly shooting that left 7 people dead in Atlanta.

Atlanta police say a romantic breakup sparked
yesterday's deadly shootings-
Police say the gunman killed his ex girlfriend, her sister and four of her children before turning the gun on himself.
The sole survivor was an 11-year old who says the gunman tried to kill him too, but the gun jammed. The boy played dead and then hid in a closet.
The boy said the shooting started after his mother told the man their relationship was over.
A tax freeze for senior citizens?

The 70th major leagues all-star game is taking place in Boston tonight. The University of Minnesota and the Big 10 are still after Terry Holland. Reports out of Minneapolis yesterday
say that Big 10's commissioner Jim Delany is now behind the effort to make Holland the school's new coach.

Holland has been the Cavaliers' athletic director since '95, and he is still the winningest basketball coach in UVa history.
Delany says Holland may be 57, but he has the energy of a 40 year old.
Plus, the biggest up side Holland has is that he is viewed as a man of integrity. Just the ticket for a program that has just been through an academic scandal.
Minnesota wants Holland to visit the campus before saying NO.
The pursuit of Holland picked up even more steam yesterday when Seton Hall's Tommy Amaker asked to no longer be con
sidered for the job. Minnesota was apparently ready to give him $7 million over 7 years.
Today Northside high school softball queen Brandy Bailey will be featured along with the US women's soccer team in the pages of Sports Illustrated. You can find her in the "Faces In the Crowd" section.

She has been invited to play with an 18 and under AAU team out of Richmond in the national championships at Disney World beginning this Thursday.

And then it's off to Los Angeles for the Friendship Games and competition against teams from Japan & Canada.
Unfortunately, this means she will miss the Commonwealth Games this weekend.

The wet weather may have been a hinderance but it did not stop the Roanoke Valley's best young golfers from competing in their annual two day Junior Tournament.
Jason Owneby won the event shooting a one under par 70 at Countryside yesterday and had a two day total of 117.
Chris Koon also shot a 70 yesterday but finished with a two day total of 118 for second place.
Matt Chandler was in the third spot with 119 for the tournament.

The day started with the Pee Wee's hitting the course first.
The 11 and under golfers play four and a half holes teeing off from 150 yards from the green.
It took five playoff holes to decide this year's Pee Wee Champion.
David Hudgins took first place while Eddie Truett came in a close second.
These young golfers are following in the footsteps of several other great golfers from the Roanoke Valley.

((Tiki Barber's size has forced him to hurdle both tacklers and doubters during his first two NFL seasons. The Giants are bringing five running backs to camp for his third year.
With the exception of the Roanoke Valley All-Stars football clinics and visiting he and his wife Jenny's family, Tiki has spent much of the off season staying in game shape.
Not being in shape and trouble with NFL offenses forced Ronde to the bench for most of his first two NFL seasons. But Tampa Bay coach Tony Dungy didn't lose confidence.
A June 27th article in the "Sporting News" selected a break out player for 99 in each position and Ronde was the chosen one at corner, saying " this guy has pro bowl writing all over him". The praise stems from the final six games of 98 in which lead Buccaneer cornerbacks in tackles, sacks and pass break ups numerous times.
The Barbers will be reunited September 12th when the Giants and the Bucs open the NFL season against each other in Tampa, Steve Mason, news 7 sports.))

Lance Armstrong continues to amaze at the Tour De France.

Yesterday he weathered a driving rain,a wicked wind and a nasty climb to not only win the ninth stage of the Tour but dominate the 133 mile stage through the Alps.
He now has a six minute and three seconds lead after nine stages.
Many people see truckers as aggressive and reckless drivers who cause most of the interstate accidents.
But do truckers deserve that reputation?
At Six tonight, we introduced you to veteran truck driver Charlie Craddock and spent a day with him as he traveled from Virginia to Denver, Colorado.
