((For days the Kennedy family had wished for a miracle. Any sign that John F. Kennedy Junior, his wife Carolyn and sister-in-law Lauren might be alive after their plane crash. But grief replaced hope as the American flag was lowered to half staff at the sprawling Hyannisport compound. As divers plunged into the waters of the Atlantic, looking for clues into why John Junior's plane went down, the Kennedy's finally broke their silence. In a statement issued by Senator Ted Kennedy, the family said "John was the shining light in all our lives..and in the lives of a nation and the world that first came to know him when he was a little boy."
The Bessette family spoke about their grief too... at the loss of two daughters... Through a spokesperson, the family thanked the many people who helped in the vain rescue effort.
Grant Stinchfield, Bessette Family Spokesperson "Nothing prepares you for the loss of a child." federal investigators meanwhile now say the Piper Saratoga plane flown by the young Kennedy dropped from the sky faster than first thought.
