Valleydale workers ratified a new contract today.
The company and its union, The United Food and Commercial Worker Local 400, had been negotating the details of the contract for about a month.

(( The new five year contract was supported by an overwhelming majority of the workers.
The local union represents about 200 Salem meat packers.
Many of the workers say they were very pleased with what the company had to offer.

The new contract will increase wages by 35 cents the first year, 25 cents the third and fourth years, and 40 cents the fifth year.
And workers no longer have to pay a 250-deductible for health care coverage.
But Marlene Dempster voted against the contract.
She says the health benefits are better, but the pay increase isn't high enough..and the company's 401 K plan is useless.

[Pool-Accident]

A 9 year-old boy nearly drowned Friday afternoon in a swimming pool at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Justin Moon is now in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Hospital Spokesman Tom Urtz says several children swimming at the time spotted Moon lying at the of bottom the pool.

Moon was unconscious when he was pulled to the surface, he was stabilized and later flown to UVA.
Urtz says the hospital believes that the boy was by himself with no adult supervision.
The hospital provides the pool for employees of Centra Health and their families.
Hospital policy requires all children under the age of 14 to be accompanied by an adult.
The incident has been now turned over to The Investigation Bureau of the Lynchburg Police Department. They were unavailable for comment.

A patient's advocate is saying that residents of the Franklin Manor Adult Rest Home are being moved without having a say in where they are going.

On July 13-th the L-A-P Care Services announced they were closing their doors by the end of the month. So far about 50 patients have been moved to other L-A-P owned homes in North Carolina and Southwest Virginia. However some say residents think their only choice is to move to a home owned by the same company. This could mean the resident could be further away from their family. L-A-P's regional director says he speaks with each patient to ensure they are comfortable with where they are being moved.

ve electricty. The company is anticipating a serious electric problem because of the hot weather this coming week and are asking their customers in homes, factories, and stores to try and do the following:

FBI officials say a Yosemite National Park employee is dead, because they missed a killer.
Investigators thought they know who was killing women at the park, but now believe they were on the wrong track all the time.

(( The brutal killing of 26 year old Joie Armstrong, found beheaded in Yosemite National Park this past week, may have been prevented, investigators admitted today, if they d done a better job.
JAMES MADDOCK, FBI I VE ASKED MYSELF WHETHER WE COULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY THAT MIGHT HAVE PREVENTED THE MURDER OF JOIE ARMSTRONG. I VE STRUGGLED WITH THAT ISSUE FOR THE LAST 24 HOURS AND CONTINUE TO DO SO.
The FBI arrested a suspect in Armstrong s murder, Cary Stayner, 38 years old. They also now believe Stayner is linked to the killing of three other women near Yosemite six months ago.
In February mother and daughter Carol and Julie Sund and a family friend Silvina Pelosso were abducted and murdered just outside the National Park.
JAMES MADDOCK WITH STAYNER S ARREST WE BELIEVE THAT NO OTHER PERSON INVOLVED IN ANY OF THESE MURDERS IS STILL ON THE LOOSE.
But for months the FBI had insisted all the suspects were already in custody, suspects with long criminal records, all of whom insisted they had nothing to do with the murders.

And it now appears that while investigators were satisfied the killer could not strike again...he may still have been near Yosemite Stayner lived and worked at the motel where the three women were last seen.

((After four days of testimony and argument, a jury in Montgomery County circuit court found the former Virginia Tech quarterback not guilty of raping a female student last March.
But one viewer believed we were guilty of bad judgement.
"The graphic details reported in the Druckenmiller rape trial during the last several broadcasts were unnecessary, offensive and outrageous," he wrote. "These details were immaterial to the story...Such information is better left in the court record rather than beamed into the homes of thousands across the region. I am deeply disturbed at such signs that my hometown station continues to depart from its tradition of accurate and tasteful reporting for the latest tactics characterizing the Springerization of journalism."
Al Bedrosian's spanking of a child in a hospital emergency room brought these comments:
"We need to start rediscovering good old fashioned discipline in an attempt to save our future from anymore Columbine-like disasters. Scapegoating does not solve the problem. Simple discipline, not abuse, will solve the problem...Personally, if my infant's arms were being pulled on despite my admonition to stop that behavior, I would have corrected that child's behavior in the same manner as Mr. Bedrosian."
And there was praise for the piece on the tent revival in Botetourt County.

Bedford independent Lacey Putney is a candidate for Speaker of the House under the Republican majority.
Some analysts say that Putney, who is the the senior member of the General Assembly, is running neck and neck with House GOP Leader Vance Wilkins.
Legislators agree that at this point, no candidate has enough votes to get a majority of GOP incumbents in the House... and the process is meaningless unless Republicans pick up at least one more seat in the upcoming election.

Bobby Labonte makes a sweep at Pocono today winning the Pennsylvania 500.

Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarrett work their way through traffice fighing for position in the top 5. Gordon was third and Jarrett fourth after 32 laps.
They were chasing the leader Ward Burton. But Ward blew a tire at the entrance to the tunnel turn hitting the wall and banging up the right side on lap 39.
Ward's brother Jeff was on the move he passes his teammate Mark Martin to take over the fifth spot on the track.
Then Gordon blows a tire on the right side of his car he went a lap down and returned to the track in the 39-th position.
Pole sitter Mike Skinner would cover the field and lead the race at the halfway point.
Rick Mast would lead the race twice once on a green flag stop and then again with over 40 laps to go.
Then Jerry Nadeau taps the rear of Bill Elliott's car sending him into the wall Elliott was running in the top five.
Bobby Labonte would take the lead near the end of the race and he takes the checkered flag winning the Pennsylvania 500 by more than 8 seconds.

(( At four years old Levi Dooley is traveling the same track as Earnhardts and Waltrips--starting behind the wheel of a go-cart at an early age.
He races in the Pee Wee division at the 460 Speedway in Montvale, but the competition isn't just limited to the little guys.
Sometimes you'll see drivers in their 70's rounding the quarter mile oval.

Giles has seen the sport grow in his four years of operating the track from 25 cars to 95 go-carts.
NASCAR's popularity is one reason for the growth.

And this is serious business. The drivers race at tracks from Virginia to Daytona Beach, Florida.
The cars can travel at speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour.
And on this race day the 460 Speedway gave away a 12-hundred purse.
The track also operates on a points system and at seasons end five thousand dollars will go to the points leader.
And after Levi Dooley gets a few years under his belt he may be a contender.
