An argument between father and son led to a lengthy standoff with police in Wytheville today. Investigators say the man at the center of it is a former sheriff's deputy .. who's run into trouble with the law before.

Police went to arrest 50 year old Jackie Kitts .. after his father had left the home to take out a warrant against him.
When police arrived, Kitts refused to come out and authorities surrounded the home.

The federal government has appealed Judge Jackson Kiser's latest ruling in the case to the U.S. Fourth Circuit in Richmond.
The main issue is how closely the courts should monitor the admission of women to V-M-I.
The new "rats" report in two weeks. This year, women will be part of the "cadre", the select group that supervises new cadets. But we won't be able to show you any of that; cameras have been banned.
V-M-I says upperclassmen felt media coverage intruded on their event.

The former Virginia Tech quarterback was named in a civil suit filed by two men who claim Druckenmiller took part in a fight outside a Blacksburg nightspot back in 1996.
The men were seeking damages for their injuries and there was supposed to be a hearing tomorrow.
But attorneys for the two men have filed a motion asking that Druckenmiller's name and that of three others be removed from the lawsuit.
However, the motion is worded so that they could be named again in the future.

According to one family who bought a horse -- Baldwin would bring the animals in by the truckload from Texas, set them up at Smith Mountain Lake, run ads in the paper and pull in crowds of potential buyers.

A man was found dead in Smith Mountain Lake this afternoon.
Franklin County authorities say the body of a 39-year-old black male was spotted in the Union Hall section of the lake.
Officials say they know who he is, but aren't releasing his name.
They also say a stolen car was found at a summer home where the man's body turned up.
An investigator says it's an open case right now, but he believes the man committed suicide.

First Union had more than the usual guests at its sixth annual "Kids Day at Work."

The kids met Meeko -- a German Shepherd from Czechoslovakia who is a member of the Roanoke County Police Department K-9 unit. This was part of the company's effort to show the visiting kids what their parents do as well as some other jobs. They were impressed.
