The fire on Purgatory mountain has been burning since around two this afternoon.

But despite fire fighters efforts to control the blaze it quickly spread to the mountainside. Within hours the fire had reached the top of the mountain and began spreading outward covering more than a hundred acres.

A helicopter was brought in to protect homes and other structures in the path of the fire.
It was taking water from the James River, about 4-hundred-and-50 gallons at time, and then dropping it over the fire.

And now hot shot crews with the Virginia Department of Forestry will be working around the clock to stop the fire from spreading even more.

Governor Gilmore is urging the nation's governors to oppose plans for a federal lawsuit against the tobacco industry. Gilmore is one of five tobacco state governors that says a successful lawsuit could decrease the amount of money the states would be able to collect under last year's national tobacco settlement. Virginia's share of that settlement is expected to be four billion dollars over 25 years. The Justice Department is moving ahead with its plans for a lawsuit.

Environmentalists opposed the trip, concerned about accidents, but a spokesman for Portland General Electric says everything is going fine.

Virginia's climate is typically favorable for growing grapes....they're one of the few crops actually thriving in the drought conditions.

Dale Jarrett became a two time winner at Indy today taking the checkered flag in the Brickyard 400.

Jeff Gordon started on the pole and he was leading the field with 142 laps left to go in the race.
Moments later Mark Martin would pull his ford to the front and he was the leader with 131 laps to go.
And points leader Dale Jarrett took his turn up front to become the third leader of the race after the first green flag pit stops.
The first caution came out on lap 43 then later in the race Kyle Petty loses control and hits the wall for the second caution of the day.
Bobby Labonte would make his move up front and he was the fifth leader of the day.
But Jarrett dominated he led 117 of 160 laps and he pulled out to a three second lead after taking two tires on a late caution to hold off bobby Labonte and win the Brickyard 400.

((George Seifert has scrapped Carolina's once feared three-four, zone blitzing scheme for a 4-3 front, an alignment that should benefit defensive end Shawn Gilbert. The 46.5 million dollar man cashed in on only six sacks last season due to constant double teams, that occur more infrequently this season. ((:)) Under the immediate supervision of new defensive coordinator John Marshall, the 4-3 could limit linebacker Kevin Greene's playing time. Greene roamed free in 98, registering 15 sacks, but, at 37, can he effectively cover the pass as his new role sometimes calls for. Greene showed his willingness to do whatever it takes to keep his starting job by trimming his body weight down from 265 to a sleeker 235. ((:)) ((:))
Former Nebraska star and now Panther left defensive end Jason Peter is also under the microscope, after a 33 tackle, one sack performance in 14 games last year. The line isn't the only area that is being addressed. Defensive back Doug Evans hardly showed the form he demonstrated in Green Bay. But there's no where to go but up.))

Five new members were inducted into the N-F-L Hall of Fame today in Canton, Ohio.

Lawrence Taylor, who redefined the outside linebacker position and Eric Dickerson the third leading rusher in N-F-L history were joined by guards Tom Mack of the Rams and Billy Shaw of the Bills.
Also joining the group was Ozzie Newsome, who played his entire career only 60 miles from Canton with the Cleveland Browns.
