Helicopters and bulldozers were brought in this morning to help firefighters contain a blaze on Purgatory mountain.
The dry conditions and low humidity caused the fire to burn out of control yesterday.

A helicopter was brought in to protect homes and other structures in the path of the fire.
It was taking water from the James River, about 4-hundred-and-50 gallons at time, and then dropping it over the fire.
And now hot shot crews with the Virginia Department of Forestry will be working around the clock to stop the fire from spreading even more.

Police and highway experts say Interstate 81 may be the deadliest
highway in Virginia.
It stands out because highway fatalities are down statewide.
Last year was the deadliest in a decade for the 148 mile stretch of road between Wythe and Rockbridge counties.
The fatality rate this year is on pace to match 1998's toll.
Twenty-six people died last year along the stretch and with five months left this year, at least
16 people have died.

Danville police are searching today for a suspected carjacker.
Police say, Helen Cooper gave the suspect a ride from Industrial Avenue to the Purdum Woods Apartments late last night.
The suspect then pulled a small handgun on the victim and took her car, a blue 1991 Pontiac Sunbird.
Police are looking for a black man about 5-foot-6, weighing 150 pounds, who goes by the name Shay.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Danville police.

This morning the Federal Aviation Administration is investigation two separate plane mishaps.

Fortunately no one was injured when a TWA Jet carrying 149 passengers blew out two of its tires after taking off from San Jose, California, yesterday.
Officials say a hydraulic problem on the TWA MD-80 caused the two
left rear tires to blow out.
The plane made an emergency landing in nearby San Francisco.
It was on its way to Saint Louis.

In the second incident, parts of a Federal Express DC-10 came crashing into a Memphis neighborhood. Fortunately no one was hurt when parts of the plane fell off as it was approaching to land in Memphis.
The plane landed safely.

Workers at a Kentucky nuclear plant were apparently misled about the radioactive material used in the plant.
And now the company must spend at least 240 billion dollars in a clean up effort.
Employees of the Paducah
Gaseous Diffusion Plant thought they were working with uranium, which is mildly radioactive.
But they were actually using highly radioactive plutonium.
The workers inhaled plutonium laced dust brought into the plant for 23 years as part of a government experiment to
recycle used nuclear reactor fuel.
The Washington Post reports contaminants from the plant have spilled into ditches and eventually seeped into creeks and private wells.
Department of Energy says a site inspection has found ``no imminent threats.''

36 year old Carl Holland Junior apparently grabbed money from the cash register when it opened and then ran off.
Police tracked the him down when they saw a car driving without head lights when they attempted to pull him over he took off.
Holland then ran his car into this house on Glade Creek Drive.

Governor Gilmore is urging the nation's governors to oppose plans for a federal lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
Gilmore is one of five tobacco state governors that says a successful lawsuit could decrease the amount of money the states would be able to collect under last year's national tobacco settlement.
Virginia's share of that settlement is expected to be four billion dollars over 25 years.
The Justice Department is moving ahead with its plans for a lawsuit.

A unique family reunion took place in Buchanan yesterday. It wasn't aunts, uncles, and grandparents, but a group of people who grew up together. Joy Sutton has the story.

((They hugged each other, took pictures and reminisced about the good old days.
Ricky Williams and Billy Terry haven't seen each other in at least 30 years when they used to play together as kids in their neighborhood in Buchanan.
But despite a few physical changes they recognized each other right away.

The families attending the Buchanan Families reunion at one time lived in same neighborhood, went to the same schools, and played together.
Now several generations have come back to reunite with what many of them call extended family.
Malcolm Barnett came all the way from Frankfurt, Germany to attend the reunion.
He remembers the way things use to be growing up in a time when Buchanan was segregated.

Each person who attended received a T-shirt that listed all the families and their neighborhoods.

He gets paid to compete and perform demonstrations.
But on this day he's coaching members of the Smith Mountain Lake Water Ski Club.

The water ski club sponsors at least three clinics like this one each year.
More than 60 members of all levels of wake boarders as well as water, slalom skiers make up the club.
In fact two water skiers are getting to compete in nationals.
