The U-S Department of Agriculture is coming to the aid of farmers in 18 Virginia Counties affected by the drought.

Governor Gilmore announced tonight that the U-S-D-A is allocating 1-point-9 MILLION dollars through its Emergency Conservation Program for areas with serious water resource problems.

The dry conditions are making the job of dozens of firefighters more difficult tonight as they continue battle the brush fire that's engulfed about 200 acres near Smith Mountain Lake.

The fire started when lightning hit Smith Mountain Saturday.
But firefighters thought it was extinguished... until it flared up yesterday.
The fire continued to spread last night, even as 60 firefighters and foresters worked to construct barriers.

A helicopter was called in today to help douse the flames with water.
No homes are threatened by the brush fire.
Officials say that without rain, the blaze could continue to burn for several days and engulf another 200 acres.

30- year old Richard Bullard died on the dance floor at Arnold's restaurant two years ago.
Terry and Kerry Scales of Martinsville admit they fired guns inside the restaurant but say they did so out of fear.

They maintain they shot Bullard and wounded another man in self defense.
But prosecutors say the twins should be found guilty -- pointing out the pair immediately fled the scene and discarded the weapons which were later found by police.

Today, the southbound interchange at Valley View Boulevard was finally opened to traffic.

Though it cost city taxpayers more than five and a half million dollars to build, city officials say the investment is already paying off, with new businesses such as Best Buy that are locating in the area.

A Campbell County deputy was justified when he shot and killed a knife- wielding murder suspect last month.

Sergeant J.K. Schmitt shot Farakhan Ali Wright four times after Wright charged at him waving a knife.
Wright had just stabbed to death his girlfriend Keandra Carter when deputies responded to the scene.
Witnesses say Wright told police they would have to kill him to stop him.
Wright had a blood- alcohol level of point- one- three.

It may have been one too many officers responding to the scene in Panama City this morning when two police officers answered one call involving the robbery of a local donut shop.
The cops chased the suspect for two blocks when the chase came to a crashing halt.. as the police cruisers collided.
The suspect got away with all of the cash in the shop: 50-dollars.
One of the officers suffered minor injuries - he's okay now, and so are the donuts.

Kim Perrot was one of unsung heroes of the two-time WNBA champion Houston Comets.
But back in February of this year the five foot five inch point guard was diagnosed with lung cancer and told that she also had a brain tumor.
Perrot fought the disease and supported her teammates as much as they helped her.
Tonight she died peacefully with her family by her side in Austin, Texas.
Kim Perrot was just 32 years old.

It was thought the Gate City product had re-injured the same knee he hurt in high school and at Tech last year, and that he may be out for the season.
But this morning he underwent arthroscopic surgery and doctors found out that he does NOT have any ligament or cartilage damage. He should be ready to practice in less than 2 weeks.

Roanoke Catholic begins the 1999 football season with a new head coach in Paul Moyer and some decent numbers.

Moyer is familiar with the Catholic program having served as an assistant under John Cooke since 1994, The year the Celtics won the state Independent Conference championship.

Soccer fans in the area will also be pleased to hear that Roanoke Wrath member Patrick McSorley was named an assistant soccer coach for the Keydets.
He was an all-American at JMU and is still the school's all-time scoring leader.
