A study in this week's New England Journal of Medicine found that expectant mothers with untreated, under active thyroids are four times more likely to have children with low IQ's.
The research found that 19 percent of the children born to thyroid deficient mothers scored 85 or lower on IQ tests.

That compares to only five percent without such problems.
Often called hypothyroidism, an under active thyroid is easy to diagnose and treat.
Symptoms of the condition include fatigue, cramps, constipation, a slow heart rate, dry skin and hair loss.
