The fire started Saturday when lightning struck the mountain.

Officials say the fire is still about two miles away from the nearest home. No one has been evacuated.

After years of planning and weeks of delay, the new entrance to 581 from Valley View Boulevard opened to traffic this morning.

A prosecutor says a Campbell County deputy acted properly when he shot and killed a knife- wielding murder suspect last month.

Sergeant J.K. Schmitt shot Farakhan Ali Wright during a confrontation at the Pines Village Apartments.
Wright had been stabbing his girlfriend, fatally as it turns out, when Schmitt and another deputy ordered him to drop his knife.
That's when Wright charged both officers and Schmitt shot him four times.
Commonwealth's attorney Neil Vener reviewed the case, and decided the use of deadly force was justified.

Corps leaders say they're taking the high road with this year's orientation -- known as cadre week. Activities like the obstacle course emphasize teamwork and cadets can even get help to complete them.
This was a special treat for most .. after a week of drilling. The new cadets -- called buds -- realize they still have some obstacles to overcome, but say they have a way to get through it -- each other.
