Good evening everybody and welcome to yet another year of Friday Football Extra here on Your Hometown Station.
I'm Mike Stevens, and in the next half hour I'll be joined by the rest of the News 7 sports team to bring you some of the more interesting stories of this preseason.
Most of you students will be headed back to school to next week
But one of Friday Football Extra most dynamic figures over the past 15 years has been in the classroom all summer long.
(---------------)

((GEORGE MILLER:)) ((What Fleming head football coach George Miller had to do was finish up 18 hour of credits this summer at Radford University to receive an endorsement for his master's degree in educational leadership.
Getting back into the groove of taking tests instead of giving them was worse than facing the Hampton Crabbers. ((GEORGE MILLER: TIME CODE 150935))
Miller will continue in his duel role of head football coach and principal of Fleming's Coulter hall this academic year. But as we told you earlier this summer, this will be his final season as the Colonels head football coach. ((GEORGE MILLER: TIME CODE 150835))
Miller has been a coach, teacher or principal for the past 25 years. He plans to stay in administration for some time to come.)) ((GEORGE MILLER:))

While it may not be a disturbing trend, they're are some coaches getting out of coaching for an administration job. Steve, you visited with to promising young men who have put down the whistle and clip board.
[anchor=steve]

Mike, Mark Lineburg was the heir to the Radford throne and Curtis Hicks, the former Alleghany and UVa star football player, had been offered two top assistant jobs. So why did two men who love the game step away.
(///// SOT /////)
(-----------------)

A play away from a state title in only his third year as a head coach. He Left Brookville after five successful years for Radford to fill his legendary fathers shoes. ((NAT SOUND:))
But Mark Lineburg's calling shocked many. He is now Radford's assistant Principal. ((:))
Mark and his Wife Cathy are expecting their first child in September. Administrative hours are not as demanding or sporadic as coaches hours, and the pay can nearly double for doing just one job, instead of teaching and coaching, which can eat up to 80 hours a week. ((:))
Meet Curtis Hicks, Floyd County's new assistant principal. After starring at Alleghany, he played linebacker for the University of Virginia. School is in it's first week and Hick's 6'3" 230 pound presence has already had a positive impact on some students. ((:))
Hicks was not a varsity coach, although while coaching football and teaching P.E. at Northside middle, the assistant jobs were coming in before the move to Floyd. ((:))
Hick's wife Marcia is also expecting. Although he will attend many athletic events the hours are better and Hicks makes no bones about the increased pay check. ((:))

Both Hicks and Lineburg have their masters degrees and have talked about getting their doctorates in education together.

Welcome back everybody to our preseason Friday Football Extra special. Over the years we've found out that it takes more than football players and coaches to make Friday nights in the fall something special.
We also have come to realize that the groups on the outside work just as hard if not harder than the players and coaches.

Mike, this team of students starts practicing when the football squads do and in some cases even earlier.
This is a major commitment in both time and money for these unsung performers of Friday nights.

A season for the school band runs from August-to-November and in some years to News Year's day if the band goes to a bowl game.
To produce an award winning group, The Cavaliers have four staff members who are paid by the band boosters.

Two years, two teams and two failed physicals with the Chicago Bears and NFL Europe later Price landed in Radford. ((:)) Price cuts the players no slack and is blunt ((NAT SOUND:)) but the Bobcats are responding with respect. ((SEAN PLOTT/RADFORD LINEMAN:))
