In FEDERAL Court, the government AND the defense rested today in the Bland Prison drug smuggling case without testimony from Inmate Michael Fulcher.

Former Prison Guard Billy King was the only one of the defendants who did testify.
King admitted he had unauthorized contact with Fulcher's family half a dozen times,

but he flatly denied taking drugs into the prison.
He had refused to go undercover and help investigators get the goods on other guards and inmates, because he said he thought that would get him killed.

Police have identified a suspect in Saturday's Northwest Roanoke murder.
Now they have to find him.

19-year-old Prentice R. Jordan was shot several times in Easley's Restaurant on Shenandoah Avenue.
Investigators believe this man, 23 year old Timothy Lee Buford fired some of those shots.
Buford is charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling.
He is 5 feet ten inches tall, 160 pounds and may have gold teeth.
Police are asking anyone who knows where Buford is to call Crime-Line at 344-8500.

Investigators in another case are just plain puzzled.
Herman Branham had a lifelong fear of gasoline and fire. So his death last winter by immolation raised plenty of questions.

Amherst County authorities have now confirmed that Branham was murdered.
Soil tests show Branham was doused with both gasoline and kerosene while in the yard of this home near Naola (nay-OH-la), then set on fire.
Now Branham's family and the police want to know who did it.

Investigators are trying to determine what went wrong on a Virginia roller coaster last night.

A 20 year old Long Island man died after he was injured on the Shockwave coaster at Paramount King's Dominion.
Timothy Fan was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coaster was shut down for inspection today.
Similar rides at other Paramount parks were also shut down.
This is the first serious accident since it opened in 1986.

HOW they'll support farmers is a tougher question. Robb has pushed for Congress to earmark 328-million dollars for growers in a disaster relief bill. But THAT'S still waiting to be ironed out.
Virgil Goode says he'll work to keep lawsuits at bay.
Last stop for Congressman Goode was Dimon, the worlds' second-largest leaf dealer and processor. The company has come under rough times in recent months, resulting in a 25-percent cutback in its workforce.

The county's solution involves using an empty school bus for the classroom. Bath County gave them the idea because they've been using converted school buses for the past 20 years. The bus is complete with heating and air, bathroom facilities, and running water. The bus isn't driven with kids on it -- but it can be taken to different locations.

The Redskins 5th round draft pick is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered while working out the NFL scouts at the combine back in February. The Skins won't let Derek suit up in pads until October at the earliest and while the anticipation is driving him nuts, he's using this time to learn and develop some patience. ((DEREK SMITH: 5312))
