The Appomattox County School Board wants to post the Lord's Prayer in county schools.
The school board's attorney advised the board that it would be illegal to do so, but they've directed the superintendent to come up with a plan to post the prayer at the county's four public schools.
Nearly 200 people attended a board meeting last week to urge the adoption of a moment of silence in schools and posting the prayer.
The Reverend Jerry Childress, a minister who has organized Sunday prayer vigils outside the schools, says Virginia law allows school systems to have a moment of silence at the beginning of the school day.

Roanoke water officials say the Cove's level this morning is 28-point-5 feet below full pond. That means the level rose two-tenths of a foot from yesterday's reading.
Recent rains are credited for the increase at Roanoke's main water source, but this is hardly enough to ease the continuing water shortage.
Even with the slight rise in water levels, tighter water restrictions are still just one-and-a-half feet away.
