NASCAR driver Ward Burton is Halifax County's own resident racing hero ... And an environmentalist off the track.

But Burton's love of nature has him in hot water with some hog farmers.

Burton spoke out at a Board of Supervisors' meetings... in support of moving hog farms farther away from neighbor's property lines.

That stance made some hog farmers, like Scott Hudson, see red.
Hudson was one of several farmers that called up Burton's sponsor Caterpillar and threatened to boycott the company's farm equipment.
But Caterpillar stood by Burton.
And since then, Burton and Hudson have resolved their differences.

Still no verdict in the Bland Prison drug trafficking and money laundering trial.
The jury got the case around four o'clock yesterday afternoon and spent all day today deliberating the fate of Inmate Michael Fulcher and four others... without a verdict.
There's some indication the jury still expects to render a decision this evening.
What members of the jury don't know is that they'll have to come back Monday anyway- -IF they convict Fulcher's Mother of drug dealing. They'd have to decide whether ETHEL Fulcher must forfeit her home as a result.

The woman who accidentally hit a boy on his way to school earlier this week has now been charged with reckless driving.

State police say preschool teacher Toni Yvonne Craig of Martinsville was driving at least 10 miles an hour over the speed limit when she hit 13-year-old Corey Mayo.
Mayo was on his way to the bus stop in front of his home on Summit Road for his first day of school.
The boy remains in serious condition at a North Carolina Hospital.
Henry County school officials and authorities changed the bus route on Corey's street yesterday to make it safer for children to walk.

The teams were supposed to play at Victory Stadium but now Amherst will host the game.

A temporary layoff in Dublin means no paychecks next week for 350 Volvo-workers.

There's a lower-than-usual demand for industrial trucks -- like trash haulers.
The United Auto Workers local president said demand will pick up again.

Former Redskin runing back Terry Allen is back in the N-F-L.

Allen was released by Washington on March 14-th. He signed a multi year deal with the Patriots. He will received a 1-hundred-thousand dollar signing bonus and a base salary of 400-thousand in 1999.

Allen left Washington as the third all time leading rusher in franchise history. He led the team in rushing last year with 700 yards and he scored 2 toucndowns on 148 carries.

The Baltimore Orioles are sending Harold Baines to Cleveland for a pair of minor leaguers.
The Orioles receive right-hander Juan Aracena and a minor leaguer to be named later.
Cleveland claimed Baines off waivers then worked out a trade to keep the Orioles from pulling him back. The 40 year old Baines was used as a designated hitter by the Orioles. He's batting 326 with 24 homers and 81 R-B-I's this season.
