Welcome one and all to the program we like to call Friday Football Extra. It's the Friday before Labor day and some teams in the area have already played 20 percent of their schedule.
[GRAPHIC=BYRD/ST. RIVER]

But for William Byrd, this marked the start of the what the Terriers hope will be run to the postseason as they traveled down 24 to Moneta at take on Staunton River.

This marked the opening game of year for three time Friday Football Extra player of the week O.J. Thomason.
But the all-state back found the going tough early in the first quarter as the Eagles held him to just one yard on three carries to keep Byrd backed up and forces the punt.
The River would then get rolling on offense on a third and six from the Byrd 35 - the Eagles keep moving with Jay Phares hitting John Martin for a first down.
Four plays later - Jermaine Moyer gets the four yard TD run and the River takes a 7-to-nothing lead after the first quarter.
On Byrd's next possession - Bo Royal bootlegs the pill around the left side and picks up 20 yards down to the Eagles' five yard line.

Glenvar would come back and score with Brandon Carroll pitching to Josh Bishop who fires the pass downfield on the 80 yard strike and run and it's a ball game again.
In the fourth the game was tied at 23-all when the Highlanders from their 41 get this Carroll pass to Ryan

[SUPER=51-Blacksburg/Graham vs. Blacksburg; :00]

The Blacksburg cheerleaders were expecting a real war tonight against the G-Men.
We pick it up with Graham on top 17-to-7. Late in the fourth quarter, the Indians attempt to make things interesting when John Candelas takes the ball in from 13 yard's away to chop Graham's lead to 17-to-14.
The Indians euphoria would end suddenly though as Leonard Graves takes off on a nice run. He will fumble the ball into a pile of Indians - but a Graham player Reed Oakes picks up the ball and he will take it all the way down to the Indians' one yard line.

Alleghany's main man Terrell Givens would give Keith something to smile about in the opening quarter as he picks up 24 yards and set up the first score of the night. It's 7-to-nothing Mountaineers.
The Fighting Blues would regroup and retaliate with Lee Stinnett motoring down the right sideline. He is going 38 yards before being brought down deep in Alleghany territory.
A few plays later Tommy Lunsford would bounce off the big pile at the goal line and fall in the endzone to make it 8-to-7 Blues.

The Wildcats came charging into the second half open to declaw the Cougars.

With ony 14 seconds left in the contest, Covington's Chris Dolan would try and play the role of a hero for the Cougar faithful. Watch as he goes straight up the middle with the dive into the endzone pulling the Cougars to within one point with 10 seconds left on the clock.

(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Roanoke/GW Danville vs. Wm. Fleming; :00]

Danville's Ed Martin may want to burn the tapes of tonight's performance once he gets his eyes on what Fleming did do his squad at the stadium.
In the third, Fleming is already on top 21-to-6 and going for three more as Elvir Berbic boots this 27 yard field goal to make the score 24-to-6 Colonels after three.
Fleming would cash in a couple of hefty insurance policies in the fourth. Fleming quarterback Richard Barrett hits the quick out to Jonathan Smith, and with the defense flowing he cuts back and up the middle and completes the 35 yard play with a score. 30-to-6 Fleming leads.
On Danville's next play from scrimmage, Jeremy Motley is hit as drops back. Fleming's Charles Corner recovers the ball and takes it in for a TD from the 10. It's now 36-to-6.
