Federal assistance is heading to Virginia after President Clinton declared parts of the state a disaster area today.
About a thousand people were left homeless after a tornado ripped roofs off houses and apartment buildings on the state's east coast Saturday.

The President was in Norfolk speaking at an elementary school.
The declaration makes the state eligible for federal aid and is aimed at the Hampton area, where the tornado caused more than seven million dollars in damage.

A week's pounding from tropical storm Dennis took it's toll on the coast.
Highway crews are repairing highway 12, the only highway on Cape Hatteras.
Heavy surf washed out several sections of the road.
Several other structures were damaged, still state officials say damage and flooding was not nearly as bad as it could have been.

It's up two and a half feet since Friday.

It's been over a month since the level was that high.
City council tomorrow will consider changing its water conservation program.

Body guards killed an attacker who wounded Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak today.

His guards shot the man, who died on the scene.

A high speed chase through heavy Labor Day traffic kept California authorities busy.

Police suspected the van was carrying illegal immigrants. It led them on a chase reaching speeds of 100 miles an hour on Interstate 5, running through San Diego and it's northern suburbs.
The van finally pulled onto the shoulder and fifteen people jumped out and ran into a nearby park.
Police are still trying to apprehend the passengers.

The catch of the day in one California city was a huge attraction for the holiday weekend...all 986-pounds of it.

Yesterday, Fishermen Tom Brooks Beach netted nearly one-thousand-pound Mako shark off Santa Barbara Island.
The shark was so big that Brooks had to tow it alongside his boat.
For now, the big fish will be on display at a Redondo Beach restaurant which has a cooler large enough to keep it chilled.
Police say hundreds of people dropped by the restaurant last night to see the shark.
