((It took nearly seven tense hours...
Several exchanges of gunfire...
and the coaxing of friends and police negotiators...
But 21-year-old Kevin Miller, shirtless and surrounded, finally turned himself in to police.

((JIM HALL/SOUTH BOSTON POLICE CHIEF: I THINK ANY TIME YOU GO INTO A SITUATION LIKE THIS AND EVERYBODY COMES OUT UNINJURED, IT'S BEEN A GOOD DAY.))

Police say Miller, already in trouble on drug charges, responded with gunfire... yelling that he wasn't the man they were looking for.
The officers fired back.
And a short time later, Miller's girlfriend left the room unharmed.
State police negotiators began talking with him by phone.
[sot 1:43:35 - :40]

((CAPT. HOWARD GREGORY/VA. STATE POLICE: INITIALLY HIS COMMENTS WERE VERY ANTAGONISTIC AND VERY HOSTILE. ))

Miller's friends showed up, reporting that he'd threatened to kill himself... and hoping they could talk him out of it.

His way out came after Reverend Lewis Motley, the pastor of Miller's church, convinced him to give up.

Miller is charged with attempted capital murder for shooting at an officer. That's a charge that could hold stiff penalties for the man that police say they weren't even looking for.

With Michael Vick sitting out tomorrow's game, the Tech offense will be in the hands of junior quarterback Dave Meyer, who played well in the second half last week.
Meyer threw a TD pass against UAB last season, but he's likely to face a much improved defensive squad tomorrow.

The Wahoos face another offense that can be dangerous. Clemson likes to spread the field and use the no huddle offense.
