Just as Southside was breathing a sigh of relief at escaping the worst of Hurricane Floyd... a Halifax County woman died because of it.
22-year-old Bobbie Wade Jackson was inside her mobile home yesterday afternoon when a large tree crashed into the home and killed her.
She was holding her two-week old baby boy at the time. The baby was not badly hurt.

Norfolk Southern wants the right to blow it's own horn.
The company has sued to overturn an ordinance passed by the Marion Town Council prohibiting the blowing of train whistles during the night. The local ordinance was passed five months ago following complaints by residents that their sleep was being disturbed. It allows an exception for emergencies. Mayor Marshall Guy said there's no reason for trains to blow their whistles at the town's five railroad crossings at four o'clock in the morning. The railroad's lawsuit was filed this week in federal court in Roanoke. It contends that the restriction is illegal under the Federal Railroad Safety Act.
