((More than a week after Hurricane Floyd flooded parts of eastern North Carolina, many farms are still underwater. With crops submerged and dead livestock floating in floodwaters, Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman announced more help from Washington. Dan Glickman/Secretary of Agriculture "Five million dollars has been made available to fund disposal of decaying hog and poultry carcasses contaminating water in North Carolina as a result from Hurricane Floyd."
Officials fear damage to North Carolina's agriculture will exceed one billion dollars with small farmers bearing the brunt of it. It's estimated the flooding could put one out of seven farmers out of the business. As floodwaters slowly recede, thousands are still stranded by floodwaters. The National Guard is providing them with some relief, airlifting food and supplies. First Lt. Larry Bass/North Carolina National Guard "With the rivers beginning to recede today,.. hope that in the next several days those victims trapped by floodwaters will be able to be freed." In Wake County, residents living downstream from a lake are bracing for more water. The Army Corps of Engineers plans to release a dam to prevent the lake from overflowing. Local companies are digging into their deep pockets to help North Carolina recover. Senator Jesse Helms says he'll even ask one of the world's wealthiest people, Bill Gates, for tax-free donations to flood victims. Jennifer Jones, CBS News, Charlotte.))
