((Vo (sound of dentist drilling) Its a sound that none of us like but
something we have to live with....This is something we have to live with
too..Bacteria...And its everywhere including the small tubes that
supply water to your dentist equipment.
Margaret Johnston
What people dont see is whats inside the tubing that- isnt getting
wiped down, it isnt getting disinfected or sterilized in the majority
of offices.
Vo
Margaret Johnston is a practicing dentist who is fighting to cleanup
dentistrys dirty little secret. In her research, she tested 150
dentists offices nationwide and found the water in over two thirds of
those offices, unfit for human consumption, by military standards.
That dirty water can create a serious health problems for high risk
patients like seniors, asthma sufferers, and those with a weak immune
system.
Margaret Johnston
You dont need to have dead bodies in order to know that something is
not hygenic and is hazardous.
Vo We found fifteen dentists in the New York area who agreed to
anynomously have their dental water lines tested. We sent those samples
to Dr. Bernard Moncla at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Bernard Moncla
All these black dots are fungi. And this little spidery looking guy,
those are fungi as well.
There were 72 percent that failed to meet the standard recommended by
the American Dental Association.
Vo
And thats exactly what Dr. Johnston found in her independent study.
Some of the bacteria we found included streptococcus, which can cause
strep throat and bacillus which is a common soil contaminant. Of the
samples we sent in, the worst came back with over a million colonies of
bacteria. The cleanest? A sample from a URINAL at CBS. It tested
below a hundred and take into consideration, the American Dental
Association says anything above 200 does not meet their "voluntary"
standards.
Moncla:
Public toilets get scrubbed and disinfected...in most you know, thats a
public health issue//Dental lines, you just cant scrub them, theyre
too small. They have to be replaced.
Dr. Chris Miller
There is some expense, no question about it. But thats not necessarily
a - an important consideration when theres a potential risk involved.
Vo
Dr. Chris Miller is a microbiologist...and a spokesperson for the ADA.
For the last 4 years, the ADAs been working with dental-equipment
manufacturers to come up with a solution by the year 2000. Already,
some manufacturers have products on the market. Most involve initially
disinfecting water lines, then, dentists have many different ways to
keep their new lines clean. For example, using disposable filters...
chemicals to treat the water...or, sterile water delivery systems.
Currently, there are no laws enforcing water quality in dental lines.
Dr. Chris Miller
I dont think this needs to be legalized. The dental profession has a
very good history of being pro-active in relation to patient safety. And
they will continue to do so.
