Millions of residents across the southwest did not get a peaceful sleep
last night. They were jolted awake by a powerful earthquake centered in
the remote community of Joshua Tree, California.

((Spring cleaning came early for folks in Southern California. Many spent
Saturday clearing away fallen debris, and fixing up store shelves.

Everything came tumbling down in the middle of the night ... when a
magnitude seven earthquake shook the region. The quake was centered in
the Mojave Desert, but its power could be felt hundreds of miles
away.... from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Tijuana, Mexico.

The quake was especially frightening for people aboard this Amtrak train
headed to L-A. All 155 passengers had to be evacuated after the train
jumped the tracks. Only minor injuries were reported.

A Roanoke County family is homeless tonight after their home is destroyed by fire.

It happened around 8:30 on Newport Road.
Apparently two people were outside gathering wood to build a fire when they noticed flames coming from the back of the house.
Fire fighters battled the blaze for over 2 hours and during that time ran out of water.
Luckily no one was in the home at the time of the fire.
Officials will be investigating the cause.

Voluntary evacuations are underway along sections of the flood ravaged North Carolina coastline as Hurricane Irene makes her way up the coast. She already left her mark in South Florida and now the clean up process is beginning. Jennifer Jones has the story.

((This is how Hurricane Irene left South Florida. As much as 18 inches of
wind-driven rain fell from Key West to West Palm Beach. Streets and
homes flooded, families stranded.

And this flooding so far has claimed five lives near Fort Lauderdale. In
one incident, a mother, her twin sons, and their friend electrocuted by
a downed powerline submerged in floodwater.

"Vitually two family members walked up to that with their pet, stepped
into that water. Other family members heard the screaming and they died
almost instantaneously on the spot."
Irene swirled through South Florida packing winds up to 85 miles per
hour ... leaving more than a million homes without power, and farms
devastated. Places like Miami-Dade County are now turning to state and
federal officials for help.

agricultural damage. Just about every piece of farming land is literally

The N-double-A-C-P has voted to boycott the state of South Carolina, unless the Confederate Battle Flag is removed from the statehouse.

The N-double-A-C-P's national board voted to begin a tourism boycott on January first, 2000.
South Carolina legislators have refused to remove the flag, saying it represents southern heritage, and honor's South Carolinians who died in the Civil War.
The boycott could cost the state as much as 280 million dollars a year.

A hayride accident killed one child and injured 21 others in Missouri last night.

A group of girl scouts were riding in a wagon, being pulled with a tractor when it went out of control.
About half of those hurt had serious injuries including broke bones.
The tractor driver says the machine suddenly went out of gear.
Investigators are trying to reconstruct the accident, and are checking the tractor and it's brakes for mechanical problems.

Basketball Legend Wilt Chamberlain was laid to rest today.

Several basketball greats were among those who attended the funeral in Los Angeles.
They spoke of his talent, and said, if you want to see the impact he had on the sport, look at the record books.
25 years after his retirement, Chamberlain still holds a number of records.. the only player to score 4000 points in a season, and 100 points in a single game.
He was also remembered as a great human being, who was loved by his fans long after he left the court for good.
