A fire created some tense moments at a Radford apartment complex.

Several residents at New River Overlook apartments were trapped inside when the entrance to the complex caught fire-- filling several apartments with smoke.
It happened when some Halloween decorations out front caught fire.
Fire fighters were concerned because some of the residents there are handicapped and elderly.
Several people had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Officials say no one was seriously injured. They are currently working to find places for the residents to stay.

Southern California has been jolted by a powerful seven-point-oh earthquake.
It happened this morning around three pacific time.
There are no reports of serious damage at this time.
Scientists say the quake was centered about 32 miles north of the town of Joshua Tree, in the Mojave Desert, that's about 100 miles east of Los Angeles.
People in L-A say buildings swayed for nearly 30 seconds.
The quake was also felt in San Diego and in Las Vegas.

A mother, her twin sons, and a teenage friend were out walking the family dog when the three boys and the dog ran ahead into a puddle -- not seeing a downed power line.
They were electrocuted.
The mom was killed when she ran in after her sons.
A 13-year-old boy was also electrocuted when he picked up a power line.
Forecaster say Irene could now be heading towards storm weary North Carolina.
The storm has already dropped up to a foot and a half of rain on Florida.
Nearly a million and a half people are with out power.

A majority of council is said to support one of the two finalists, but the leading candidate is reportedly asking for more than some members of council want to offer.

Doctor Jerri Nielsen is in New Zealand this morning after being rescued from the South Pole.
A U-S Air Force Starlifter carrying Nielsen arrived in Christchurch around 5:30.

She was rescued from the a research station at the South Pole five months after discovering a lump in her breast. The Antarctic winter prevented an earlier rescue.
