Even in the dark, Investigators from the National Transportation Safety
Board toured the wreckage of a bizarre and ghost-like flight that ended
in tragedy.
A Lear jet carrying professional golfer Payne Stewart and five others
flew halfway across the country, its windows iced or fogged over its
passengers--probably unconscious-- even as the plane nose-dived out of
the sky and into a grassy field in South Dakota.
BOB FRANCIS/NTSB VICE CHAIRMAN:
Set apparently on autopilot, the Lear jet -- which was flying from
Orlando to Dallas-- was cruising at 45-thousand feet, and radio
controllers were unable to talk to the crew.
So, officials sent fighters jets after it-- to see what had gone wrong as
the plane continue to veer hundreds of miles of course.
Capt. Chris Hamilton, 40th Flight Squad:When I went up there and initially thought I could help this aircraft and help then recover safely. I was not going up there to unfortunately see an aircraft where nobody's conscious on board.
Investigators believe the jet may have lost cabin pressure soon after taking off from Orlando.
With its passengers unconscious or dead from lack of oxygen, the plane
presumably flew until it ran out of fuel.
The accident killed two of the most recognizable names in golf.
Payne Stewart was the reigning US Open Champion and was infamous for his
attire on the golf course.
Also killed, Bruce Borland one of the sports premier course designers.
Stewart's family issued a statement asking for prayers.
