We begin tonight with the death of a champion. PGA touring pro Payne Stewart was killed today in a bizarre plane crash in South Dakota. The private leer jet, on which he was a passenger, took off in Orlando this morning heading for Dallas. But the plane never completely turned left. Hours after its scheduled arrival, the plane crashed in South Dakota killing Stewart and the four others on board.

For local golfing fans who make the yearly trek to Greensboro each spring for what is now the Chrysler Classic, Stewart was a mainstay. Back in 1995, we caught up Stewart after he had just completed a laughable round with former Murphy Brown star Jay Thomas.
