Garland Spangler announced yesterday afternoon that he will not run for re-election.
He thanked his supporters, but said the stress caused by the publicity has taken a toll on his health and that he doesn't believe he's strong enough to handle a second term.
It's too late to get Spangler's name off the ballot.
If he were to win, a replacement would be appointed in January to fill the spot, until November of two- thousand when a special election would be scheduled.

Half a dozen college professors are challenging Virginia's law that prohibits state employees from accessing sexually explicit material on the internet at work.
The professors say the law could keep them from doing valid research... and yesterday an attorney asked a federal appeals court to throw out the law that the A-C-L-U says is unconstitutional.
Attorney General Mark Earley's office says the law merely governs how state-owned property can
be used.
