The elderly are often victims of criminals trying to scam them out of their money.
But local police, along with some citizens, are trying to stop it.

((Four years ago Carol and Michael Savo started a neighborhood crime watch in their Salem neighborhood. They were tired of seeing juvenile crime and they wanted their neighbors to join in the efforts. Carol Savo says four years ago the elderly in the neighborhood were being targeted but now everything has changed.

During a crime prevention forum earlier this week - officials talked about Medicare fraud, identity theft, and credit card scams. Lerline Brown says these meeting made her more aware of scams. Now, she plans to be more cautious with her credit card.

Fifty Martinsville plant workers suffered carbon monoxide poisoning yesterday.

It happened inside this building at Professional Distribution Services.
Workers say they started having headaches, nausea and shortness of breath.
Firefighters believe a forklift inside the plant was responsible for the carbon monoxide fumes.
All 50 of the workers were treated and released from Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
The forklift has been removed... and fire officials say air at the plant is now safe.

He's accused of shooting and killing 19-year old Prentice Jordan at Easley's Restaurant in August.
Buford was arrested last month in Raleigh, North Carolina.

A Bedford County couple sold drugs in a home where they also operated a day care center.

Yesterday 36- year- old Monica Farmer pleaded guilty to possession of L-S-D.
So did her 19- year- old son David Underwood.
Authorities say the pair were coerced into selling drugs by Monica Farmer's husband, Tony.
Both were given two- year suspended sentences.
Tony Farmer will be sentenced in December.

Robinson was indicted yesterday - just a few weeks after Virginia's Secretary of Public Safety announced an investigation into several complaints of widespread sexual abuse in women's prisons.
Also this week, a former jailer in Washington County was indicted on charges of having sex with a female inmate.

U-V-A is admitting what other colleges may try to hide.
Officials acknowledge that the school gives a special review to undergraduate applicants with wealthy parents who may donate money.
The same goes to applicants who get influential recommendations.
One school official said as long as an applicant is otherwise qualified, it's legitimate to consider the family's ability to financially help U-V-A.

It's the case of the missing test scores for some Virginia Tech students.
Prospective law students spent six hours taking the L-SATs on October second.
But the tests appear to be lost in the mail.
Administrators of the L-SAT say if they don't show up in a couple of days the 280 students will have to retake the test.
