Good evening one and all and welcome to the program we like to call Friday Football Extra. Tonight marks the next to last week of the regular season, and not surprisingly a number of district titles and playoff spots are still unclaimed.

That, however, is not the case in the Blue Ridge district where the Salem Spartans clinched at the very least a tie for that title tonight by spanking Alleghany 56 to 0 up in Low Moor.

The Mountaineer cheerleaders were getting the crowd fired up as the team took the field for the second half.
Leading 28 to nothing Salem's Andy Mullins hits Spencer Christley on the 16 yard pass play to tthe Mountaineer 3 yard line.
2 plays later Christley takes the handoff and scores from the 2 yard line the extra point made it 35 to nothing Spartans in the third.
The Spartans would hold and get itback. This time Mullins rolls out and hits Chris Schweitzer he takes it in from 34 yards out and the Spartans led 42 to nothing.

Salem will close out its regular season schedule next Friday at home against struggling Christiansburg, but tonight the Blue Demons were on their home turf in the Burg entertaining the once beaten William Byrd Terriers.

Mike Cole was giving his team a few words of advice on how to slow down Byrd tonight. But hearing and doing are two different things as Jerome Mann takes the opening kickoff, picks his way through the defenders and eventually goes 80 yards for the touchdown to set the tone for the night as Byrd takes a 7-to-nothing lead 13 second in the game. The Blue Demons offense would look at rally as Matt Woodyard connects with Bruce McPherson for the 17 yard gain on the nice pass. Seven plays later that drive would hit a wall as Bo Royal picks off the Woodyard pass and will return it 80 yards for the touchdown to make it a 14-to-nothing game.

OJ Thomason would then tack on another score as the Terriers take a 21-to-nothing first quarter lead and improve to 8-and-1 with the 49 to 0 win.

Two teams that know all about the peaks and valleys of a 10 games season met tonight at Viking Stadium as 3 and 5 Northside met 4-and-4 Blacksburg, a team riding a three game winning streak after losing four in a row.

The Indians and Vikings shook hands to start the second half as Northside led 21-to-zip. There would be no further scoring the second half, but we're obligated to show you a few plays anyway. Northside's quarterback Tommy Morgan gets the ball to John Armstrong and he takes it around the left side and down the sideline for a 16 yard gain. Blacksburg would control the clock but have nothing to show for it in the third quarter as brandon White fires over the middle to Brett Smith. It's a 22 yard pickup but again it would not produce any points.

The 3 and 5 Rockbridge County Wildcats were still hoping to have a 500 season as they came into tonight's home game with Lord Botetourt in the Blue Ridge.

The Wildcats were celebrating senior night as the Cavaliers came to town for the Blue Ridge showdown.
botetourt would put it up in the air on the first possession of the game quarterback Anthony Ford hits Michael Mikulicli on a 65 yard pass play all the way to the Wildcat 5 yard line.
3 plays later Ford rolls out and hits Jared white on the three yard T-D pass the Cavaliers led 7 to nothing 2 minutes into the first quarter.
Rockbridge turned it over on its next possession but Ford's pass was picked off by Tim Galford and he returns it to the Rockbridge 48 but the drive stalled moments later.
Botetourt took over on its own 38 and Ford would air it out again Mikulicli would haul this one in and take it 52 yards to the Wildcat 16.

The Group Three A teams in the area are not nearly as plentiful as the other groups, and tonight western district front runner, GW Danville, a winner of seven in a row, had the evening off. The Knights appeared to have plenty of emotion as they looked to knock down the Comets. But some time you can be too jacked up, and on the first possession of the game the Comets run the option to Jarvis Hankins. He will juke a would be tackler and cut back across the field for a 46 yard touchdown into a wide open end zone. Trick or Treat - it's 7-to-nothing Halifax County. Cave Spring would decide against a house of horrors tonight at Knights' stadium, and they too would score quickly with Michael Hamlar busting through the right side. He takes it to the house from 66 yards away for his 16th TD of the season. After a Comet punt, Cave Spring would do it again. Chris Gould takes the initial hit at the line, and then bounces off the want-a-be hit man. He will eventually get into the zone from 37 yards out.

Fleming was on top 14-to-6 to open the second half, and from midfield in the third, Jermaine Hardy drops the bomb on the Eagles! Watch the former player of the week cut it up the middle, make a move to his left, spin back to his right, and come all the way across the field for the score. It's a hardy effort and it makes the score 21-to-6. On Fleming's next possession from the 50, again. Richard Barrett will fire a pass to Daray Waller down the left side line. The catch and run makes it 28-to-6 and we're still in the third quarter.

It was senior night at the Stadium as the Patriots honored this year's class of upperclassman. We pick it up in the third with PH on top 14-to-7 and looking for more. On its first possession of the third, Reggie Jones takes the handoff and motors around the right side, up the sideline and all the way to Pulaski County 7 on the back breaking run. Two plays later - Maurice Robinson fakes the handoff and rolls to his right and hits a wide open Tim Gardner in the back of the endzone. He's wide open and PH is in front 22-to-7 after the two point conversion. Pulaski would try to get this game under control in the fourth as Gregory Cobbs busts up the middle for 23 yards while dragging a few defenders along the way.

The Gretna cheerleaders rolled out the red carpet and the big banner for Friday Football Extra tonight. The Hawks would then proceed to roll the Governors. Julian Miller takes the rock and moves it 12 yards off tackle all the way down to the one yard line. On the next play - David Turner would finish off the drive with a blast up the gut. It's 6-to-nothing Hawks after the missed kick. In the second quarter after a Nelson County turnover, Gretna would ignite another drive, this one a 6 play deal as Miller takes it inside the 10 with the run. Two plays later Miller takes the handoff and goes off tackle right and strolls

The home standing Generals were honoring all of their senior athletes in all sports tonight before the kickoff. On the first play of the game, the Generals' Thomas Boyd will throw down field, but have his pass picked off Aaron Harris. He will make nice return with the pick back into William Campbell territory. Appomattox would not convert on that series, but later in the first, Chris Evans hooks up with Harris for an 11 yard touchdown pass. The Raiders take a 7-to-nothing lead.

Mike Scharnus, the Red Devil leader, huddled his troops to figure out how to wipe out their 6-to-nothing deficit. The Devil "D" would stop the Bees, but Derrick Crabtree would drop the punt after calling for a fair catch. That's a bad thing. And the Bees recover on the Rudtburg 24 yard line. A few plays after the Bees would turn the turnover into a TD as Dejon Kennedy takes it up the middle and in for a score. It's 12-to-nothing Brookville.

Jefferson Forest quieted the crowd on its first possession of the game as quarterback Doug Jones hooks up with Ben Farrell on the 13 yard play to the Eagles' 15.
Then on the very next play Brian Brandt takes the hand off, finds a hole and barrels through the Staunton River defense for the first score of the night.
With time winding down in the first half, Staunton River mounted its own drive Jermaine Moyer gets down to the two yard line on this six yard run.

The Martinsville Bulldogs took their high scoring act on the road tonight as they traveled across town to take on Fieldale-Collinsville in a little Piedmont tilt.

The FC Cavaliers were anxious to get things started tonight as they looked for the big time upset. But Martinsville would take control early on. Niquis Martin hands off to Rashawn Watkins who takes the rock up the middle for a 30 yard touchdown. The Bulldogs take a 7-to-nothing lead. In the second quarter, Jamus Martin would take the handoff and get into the act as he breaks a few tackles, and eventually take it 68 yards up the far side of the field. The Bulldogs jump on top 14-to-nothing. Shawn Wade would then run the rock. He scores from 20 yards away and the Bulldogs start to pull away as they take a 21-to-nothing lead. The Cavaliers would attempt to get up off the mat, but they fumble the

We start this one out in the third quarter with Bassett on top but only momentarily as Dan River's Jason Murphy hands off to Anthony Witcher, who makes some fancy moves and takes the ball 55 yards into the house for the score it's now 20-to-17. Bassett would fire back with U.J. Wade giving it to Cedric Watkins. He takes off straight up the middle and scores from 18 yards away. The Bengals are back on top 23-to-20. In the fourth, Dan River would swing the scoreboard pendulum back in its favor as Keith Harris runs in from the 15. It's now 34-to-31 Dan River in control, or at least in front. Bassett fires back with some fancy foot work of its own. Wade hands off to Caesar Tatum who breaks a few tackles and puts Bassett up for good with the 60 yard

The Radford Bobcats were the preseason pick to win the Three Rivers district. But along the way this season, the Cats have managed to play with more inconsistently than their veteran head coach would like. Tonight they got a chance to right that wrong as unbeaten Three Rivers leader Floyd County came to town.

The Buffaloes would find themselves caught in an uphill struggle all night long as Josh Spence sat the second half out with a concussion. Floyd was also behind 14-to-7 on the scoreboard. And that would only get worse as Giovanni Morton rattles down the field for a 28 yard gain to make it 21-to-7 Bobcats in the third. The Buffaloes offense would comeback with a drive - only to have it stopped cold on this interception that sets up yet another Radford TD. Two plays later - Jelani Hendricks completes the drive with a short run. It's now 28-to-7 and the upset is on.

And finally tonight we close things out in Highlander Heaven where Glenvar played its final home game of the season, and the final game of the Brian Hooker era. Hooker announced tonight that he is retiring from coaching at the end of this season to move into administration.
He will become the assistant principal and athletic director at Hidden Valley Junior High school - replacing David Price, who retired today.

In the first quarter on tonight's game with Shawsville, Glenvar converts on its second play from scrimmage, from the Highlanders own 39 yard line, Brandon Carroll takes the snap, drops a quick screen pass to Derrike Williams. he then goes down the far sideline for a 61 yard touchdown. Glenvar goes up 7-nothing.
On their next possession, Carroll pitches to Anthony Hackett. The fullback is gonna go east and west before finally heading south into the end zone on his way to a

Each December at our annual awards' banquet, the long-time pastor of High Street Baptist Church would grace us with his presence to bless our meal, and then later in the evening send us home with a prayer of safety. Taylor also was a faithful fan of the program and one who took extreme joy in personally meeting each and every player of the week, and greeting our coaches of the year. Brandon Blankenship sings in James River's choir and is a soloist at church, and in Shawsville he turned it up an octave to ruin the Shawnees' homecoming.
Blankenship ran for 369 yards on 31 carries, scored three touchdowns and completed a pass for 24 yards.
On the other side of the ball he had four tackles and assisted on seven others.
