He was a civil rights activist, a former mayor, and teacher.
But to his parishioners at High Street Baptist Church in Roanoke, he was even more.

Tom Rice is accused of attempting to have sex with a 13-year-old boy he met on the Internet.
Authorities said Rice drove 190 miles from his home in Martinsburg, West Virginia to Bedford.
He then checked into a hotel and drove to a school parking lot where he was to meet the boy.
The boy was actually an undercover deputy.

The Lynchburg police department is continuing its investigation of a murder that happened at a convenience store late Saturday night.
The murder happened at the Stop In on Campbell Avenue.
Police say the suspect walked into the store and shot 26 year old Shawn Ferguson several times in the head.
Ferguson died at the scene.
Police say they do NOT have a motive.
No one has been arrested.
