Just after ten after a passerby saw smoke coming from a second story window from the 135- year- old J.W. Wood building on Jefferson Street.
The structure is being renovated into the Amazement Square children's museum and was scheduled to open next summer.
Crews had the blaze under control in about twenty minutes but are still on the scene.
The cause has not been determined.

But bad weather could put off retrieving the boxes for days.
Experts say fragmented plane parts and human remains being discovered suggest the jetliner didn't shatter to pieces until it hit the water.

Prosecutors finished closing arguments against 22-year-old Aaon McKinney today after pausing for a full minute of silence.
That's how long they say Matthew Shepard was beaten before being left to die, tied to a fence.
McKinney's defense tried to say their client went into a rage because of a so-called "gay panic"... But the judge threw out that defense.
If convicted, McKinney could be sentenced to death.
