The fire broke out at the M-W Manufacturers plant around 3:30 in the afternoon. It started when gasoline was poured into a running forklift machine. Initially, the fire spread slowly until it reached the roof. Then witnesses said the fire went out of control. 14 fire companies responded. Large amounts of lumbar inside the plant kept the fire burning well into the night. But firefighters faced another problem by 8:30. They ran out of water. The fire strained the town's water system. So much in fact, Rocky Mount's mayor declared a state of emergency when the towns water supply ran out. Schools were closed and businesses were ordered to shut down until the water was replenished. In order to help the firefighting effort, the town pumped water from the Pigg River as well as tank from a local factory. Firefighters successfully kept the fire from spreading to nearby businesses. As far as M-W, some parts of the plant were saved, but plant officials said all of the production facilities were destroyed. No one was seriously injured. That's Virginia Newsreel. ))
