For almost 30 years the wall divided east and west Germany. But as celebrations today mark a decade without the Berlin Wall - some local folks with ties to Germany take a look back on the changes in their once-divided country.

((When the Berlin wall was built in the 1950's it stood as a symbol between the division of capitalism and Communism in Germany. It kept families and friends cut off from one another. Liz Neuhaus moved to Roanoke in the 1980's and can vividly remember seeing the wall for the first time.

Nan Fariss moved to Roanoke 42 years ago, and remembers even walking too close to the wall could be dangerous.

Both sides of Germany celebrated when the wall was knocked down, but at the same time many wondered what life would be like. Ten years later East Germany is struggling with employment problems, something they never had trouble with before.

Despite the problems, Nan and Liz say the wall coming down was one of the best things to happen to Germany.
Today shops and restaurants stand where the wall once towered over Germans.

An accident on interstate 81 this evening sent 3 people to the hospital.
It happened around five near the Dixie Caverns exit.
18-year old Edward Turlak (TER-lack) says he fell asleep at the wheel of his Nissan Maxima and drifted into a tractor trailer. The car hit the embankment and over turned.
His mother is hospitalized tonight with internal injuries. She's listed in serious condition.
His 13-year-old brother and 10 year old sister were also taken to the hospital. They're in good condition.

A woman pleaded guilty today in Pulaski County court- in a scheme to kill her boyfriend.

Peggy Jo Sullivan pled in Pulaski County court today to trying to hire an undercover police officer back in January.
She was sentenced to nine years behind bars.
But this is not Sullivan's only sentence. It was just last month that she sentenced in federal court to five years in prison for possession of an unlawfully-made, unregistered bomb.
Both sentences will be served at the same time.

And by this morning they were gone... All five of the freshman rats who beat up one of their own Friday have been dismissed.
The decision by a committee of upper-class cadets concludes the incident.
Five men entered the barracks room of Theodore Frances at four in the morning.
They bound him in his bedroll and beat him about the head and shoulders, an act Major General Josiah Bunting today called "reprehensible."

Tech also showed range from the perimeter, Germain Kimbro knocks down the three pointer from the right side to make it 18-to-nine with under 12 minutes left in the first half.

The Hokies were one man short last night as Clinton McPherson has left the basketball team.
Coach Ricky Stokes announced yesterday that the 6-9 redshirt sophomore from Miami, Florida, has decided to transfer to another school.
McPherson missed the entire 1998-99 season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

Arrington, the former all state performer from Liberty High School, is making a big impression with his teammates.


He transferred in at mid-year from Fort Union last year and he is expected to play a number of positions.
