Investigators looking into the crash of Egypt Air Flight 990 say no conclusions can be drawn from today's review of the cockpit voice recorder.

(( Less than 12 hours after it was plucked from the ocean, the
damaged, but mostly intact cockpit voice recorder was in the NTSBs lab
in Washington.
But the preliminary analysis was disappointing. Although the tape
was in good condition, NTSB chairman Jim Hall said so far, the results
were inconclusive.
Although one report indicates the pilots were heard talking about
problem, the tape didnt show one way or the other what that problem was
or anything else about what may have happened in that cockpit of
EgyptAir flight 990 exactly TWO weeks ago.
Investigators had been concentrating on the last two minutes of the
half hour tape during which the planes autopilot was disconnected and
the Boeing 767 started its steep and fatal plunge toward the North
Atlantic.
From listening to the tape so far, investigators cant explain why
at the end of that dive the planes engines were shut down, or why no
distress call went out from the pilots.
But investigators caution there is still more analysis to be done,
and any guessing on their part would do more harm than good.
If the cockpit voice recorder doesnt shed any new light on the
crash, investigators may turn to the wreckage for clues.
So far only tiny pieces of the plane have been recovered. The rest
remains on the ocean floor, some 250 feet deep and the pieces there
arent much bigger.
SOT/JIM HALL, NTSB CHAIRMAN
Its a real challenge because its very, very fragmented, very small
pieces so how we would recover the wreckage is something weve got to
carefully examine.
But with the weather expected to be poor for at least the next several
days, any recovery operation would have to be put on hold. Another wait
for investigators and victims families they were hoping not to have to
endure. Lee Cowan, CBS News, Newport Rhode Island.))
