((Inside NTSB headquarters, engineers are trying to solve a mystery using
a limited number of clues from Egypt Air 990s two flight recorders.
Neither mechanical failure nor sabotage can be ruled out yet.
The cockpit voice recorder was found on the ocean floor Saturday night.
Investigators hoped it would answer critical questions. Why the plane
dived so sharply from 33-thousand feet? Why its two engines were shut
off? Were the pilots alone in the cockpit? In 31 minutes of clear audio
tape-investigators say there are no conclusive answers.
The NTSB still has to decide whether it needs more of the wreckage to determine what caused the crash. Right now the underwater search is
suspended because of rough seas.
In the meantime, investigators will compare information from the flight
data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder second-for-second and will
analyze the pilots voices more closely for even the most subtle sign of
trouble.))
