((Egyptian officials are growing increasingly uneasy that the US probe into EgyptAir flight 990 will likely turn into a criminal investigation.
After careful analysis of the cockpit voice recorder, attention is now focused on EgytAirs flight crew, particularly the back-up co-pilot, Gamil Al-Batouty.
Although not scheduled to fly that portion of the flight, those who reviewed the tape believe it may be his voice uttering a prayer -- words to the effect of I have made my decision. I put my fate in Gods hands.
Few can agree on what that means, but moments later the plane went into its fatal but controlled dive toward the North Atlantic, killing all 217 on board.
In Egypt, many charge Americans will view the prayer as a sign of religious fanaticism.
The co-pilots family says that attention has only intensified their grief.
SOT/ WALID EL BATOUTY, NEPHEW OF EGYPTAIR CO-PILOT
NARR:
Although the case was to be transferred to the FBI yesterday, that move is on now on hold to give Egyptian authorities more time to review the tape.
But aviation experts say it may be impossible to find a cause, especially if it turns out to be the result of a crewmembers mental state, and not a mechanical failure something the NTSB says is less and less likely.
SOT/JIM MCKENNA, AVIATION WEEK MAGAZINE
07:04:32
Short of being in the cockpit and having seen and experienced what those men saw and experienced, its very difficult to tell what was actually happening.
COWAN ON CAM:
Nevertheless, the NTSB is still planning on recovering pieces of the plane for analysis not an easy task. Winter seas are rough off the coast of Nantucket, and a salvage mission would be long and expensive
retrieving pieces that most experts agree, will be small, and hard to piece back together. Lee Cowan, CBS News, Washington.))
