((A weekend outing ends in tragedy ... for several busloads of Penn State
University students heading back to school. They were returning from a
New York shopping trip shortly after midnight Sunday, when their charter
buses got caught in very dense fog... along this stretch of Interstate
80.
((sot: Pearl Mattison/Penn State Student)) - 14:37:49
"I was asleep and then I felt our bus like swerve off the road and our
driver slammed on the brakes. We heard like a really loud crash next to
us. Our driver got off to look at everything... and they told us to stay
on the bus while ambulances came."
((track 2))
State troopers say the driver of one of the buses initially pulled over
to the side of the road ... because of the intense fog. That then set
off a chain reaction of rear-end collisions -- killing a student and a
driver -- and injuring more than a hundred others.
((sot Chriss Grube/State Police Corporal))
((track 3))
Some of the shaken students sought temporary shelter at a nearby church,
before boarding replacement buses back to campus. University officials
are now offering them counseling.
((sot Graham B. Spanier/Penn State University President))
"Many of them were upset, some crying, some just disturbed about the
general circumstances."
((track 4))
Students were greeted with hugs and smiles ... as they arrived back at

the bus ride they will never forget.
