((Did you know that there are about eight million people in America with thyroid disease? The big problem is that only about 4 million know it. That means there are 4 million Americans, mostly women, walking around feeling crummy, because they, or more importantly, their doctor did not think about thyroid disease as being to blame. The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that's right around your Adam's apple. It's job, mainly too act as the main thermostat of the body. And when it doesn't work, many other organ systems don't work as well. Now the symptoms of thyroid disease can be subtle. Among other things, thyroid disease can make you tired, forgetful, make you gain or lose weight. It can also give you dry skin and cause changes in your menstrual cycle. So how do you check for thyroid disease? A simple blood test called a TSH. It stands for thyroid stimulating hormone. Experts say you should have this test routinely. Just like a cholesterol test, if you are over the age of fifty or if you have a family history of thyroid disease, or if you have any of the symptoms like we talked about. I'm Dr. Dave Hnida for CBS News.))
