The day gets off to a scary start- a school bus accident in Bedford County sends 13 people to local hospitals.

A dozen Bedford County students and their driver were injured this morning, when a bus ran off the road and hit a tree.

Jean, most of the injuries were minor, primarily bumps and bruises... but at least one student broke a leg, and the driver underwent surgery this afternoon.

((Bus Number Eight was on its way to Stewartsville Elementary School when the accident occurred shortly before eight o'clock this morning.
The vehicle was heading down a hill when it ran off the road and hit a tree.
Investigators say the driver apparently blacked out.

Rescue Squads responded quickly.
According to school officials, the driver and a dozen students were taken to Roanoke hospitals.
Despite the injuries, Stewartsville residents were giving thanks that the accident wasn't much worse.

The driver, Ferris Booth, has been charged with reckless driving... He's a veteran driver who residents say has an excellent relationship with the students on his route.

Jean, it's unclear at this point if a medical condition may have contributed to the accident today. School officials say a physical gave Booth a clean bill of health... but according to state police Booth indicated that he has some medical problems including diabetes and high blood pressure.

Fire broke out while a family was sleeping- this morning- killing five people.

It happened in Lynn Massachusetts, just north of Boston. The home was fully engulfed when firefighters got there.
One fire official says the victims never had a chance to get out.
One man tried to save his relatives but could not.

This Thanksgiving holds special meaning for a Pittsylvania County family and the seven Russian orphans the family recently adopted.

Brian and Anita Robbins say their house is full ... but it's never been happier.
That's because of the seven boys and girls they brought from a Russian orphanage to their Chatham farm about three months ago.
The kids spent two years in the orphanage after their mother died of cancer and were about to be split up for adoption.
But the couple and their two sons decided to take them in.

The custom of an annual tax began in 1646, with 20 beaver pelts.
Governor Jim Gilmore proclaimed today the Day of the American Indian in the Commonwealth and thanked the chiefs of the Mattaponi (MATTA-pa-NYE) and Pamunkey people.

An elderly cancer patient is in critical condition after a surgeon accidentially removed his one health kidney.

The man was admitted to a hospital in the Netherlands last month to have a cancerous kidney removed. But the surgeon apparently had the X-Ray turned the wrong way.
The hosptial's director says the doctor only realized the mistake after it was too late to save the healthy kidney.
The patient has been kept under anesthesia since the operation and is being treated for a serious infection that resulted from the botched surgery. Doctors do NOT believe the patient would survive another operation to replace the cancerous kidney.

Over 700-thousand Americans will suffer a stroke this year. It will kill about 160-thousand of them.

The company that makes Cold-Eeze brand zinc lozenges is settling a lawsuit brought against it by the Federal Trade Commission.
The F-T-C says the companies made unsubstantiated claims that Cold-Eeze could prevent colds and reduce the severity of symptoms in children.
The makers of the tablets says it has scientific evidence to back up it claim that Cold-Eeze reduces symptoms in adults.
It concedes it cannot back up other claims.

The company is promising to support any future health claims in its advertising.[S5-Hoops]
