A dozen elementary school students and their driver were injured this morning when their school bus ran off the road and hit a tree.

The accident happened in western Bedford County... as the bus made its way to Stewartsville elementary school with 18 people on board.

Keith, this was a serious accident that caused some scary moments for students and their parents... but at this point none of the injuries appears to be life-threatening.
One student broke a leg. The driver underwent surgery this afternoon.

Most suffered minor injuries, mostly bumps and bruises, but rescue squads were on the scene quickly... and a total of thirteen people were transported to Roanoke hospitals.

But a loyalty oath will be required.
Today, the State Board of Elections changed course-- scrapping an earlier oath that would have made GOP primary voters pledge they'd vote Republican in the November elections too.

U-Va political analyst Larry Sabato suggests any voter who wants to vote in the primary and violate the oath can simply sign it, and write any comments on the side about their future intentions.
Governor Gilmore pushed for the February 29th primary to make Virginia more influential in the process-- and he hopes to give Texas Governor George Bush a boost.

It already happened once in Henry County ... a sewage discharge from a treatment plant that fouled a nearby waterway.
That has led to the creation of a new task force, to see whether it could happen again.
The task force will investigate whether privately-owned sewage and water treatment plants in Henry County are doing their best to make water safe for residents.

The owner of the Fairway Acres plant was charged with endangering residents' health and the environment.

North Carolina State head football coach Mike O'Cain was fired this morning.

O'Cain says Chancellor Marye Anne Fox arrived at his front door at 7-thirty this morning and told him he had been fired.
In seven years O'Cain led N.C. State to a 41 and 40 record. He did manage to upset Florida State last season.
State never beat arch rival North Carolina in O'Cain's tenture. But the final straw may have been last weeks lost to East Carolina.
