The State Corporation Commission has given its approval to the merger between Bell Atlantic and G-T-E.
In April the S-C-C opposed the merger, but changed its position after the companies agreed to cap rates for basic telephone service through 2003.
That means some GTE customers in southwest Virginia would get a three dollar rate reduction and have their local calling areas expanded.
The merger still needs to be approved by the FEDERAL Communications Commission.

The two teams have three common opponents this season including the University of Virginia.
Both have played UVa in Charlottesville earlier this season. The Hokies topped the Cavaliers 31-7 while the Seminoles left town with a 35-10 victory over the Wahoos.
Recently, we asked the Cavs who would win if FSU and Tech met in the Sugar Bowl.

((GEORGE WELSH/UVA HEAD COACH:IT WOULD DEPEND ON WHICH DEFENSE PLAYS BETTER I THINK. BECAUSE I THINK BOTH TEAMS WOULD HAVE TROUBLE MOVING THE FOOTBALL. BOTH OF THOSE TEAMS HAVE GREAT DEFENSIVE FOOTBALL TEAMS. SO IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THAT WORKS OUT IF THEY GOT PAIRED.))
((DWAYNE STUKES/UVA DEFENSIVE BACK:VIRGINIA TECH IS A GOOD TEAM BUT DON'T GET ME WRONG, AS FAR AS FLORIDA STATE, THEY'RE A VERY PHYSICAL TEAM AND I THINK THEY HAVE A BETTER SUBSTITUTION OUT OF THE TWO. FLORIDA STATE ROTATES LINEMAN IN AND OUT OF THE GAME AT WILL WHERE AS VIRGINIA TECH, THEY REALLY DON'T HAVE THE ROTATION OF A FLORIDA STATE AND I THINK THAT WEARS ON A TEAM AFTER A WHILE. SO, I DEFINITELY THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD GAME BUT I'M GONNA GO WITH FLORIDA STATE.))
((DAN ELLIS/UVA QUARTERBACK:I HAVE TO SAY THAT FLORIDA STATE'S DEFENSE OVERALL IS BETTER. THE FRONT SEVEN ON BOTH TEAMS IS PRETTY EQUAL. I THINK THEY'RE BOTH FAST AND BOTH AGGRESSIVE AND THEY'RE BOTH PRETTY STRONG. I THINK FLORIDA STATE HAS MORE SPEED IN THE SECONDARY AND I THINK THAT'S A BIG DIFFERENCE. I CAN'T SPEAK FOR THEIR OFFENSES BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD GAME THOUGH.))

UVA tied Clemson and Georgia Tech for second in the ACC with a five and three conference record.
The Illini are tied for sixth in the Big Ten with a four and four conference mark.
