A ground breaking was held for the new building which will eventually house a new kitchen, chapel, dining room, and administrative offices.

Customers lined up outside the thrift store for its grand opening.
The store will provide families in need with free clothing and many shoppers say it's a chance to give back to the community while getting a bargain.

he century old factory that predates the mill town of Mayodan.
The rural Carolina region has already had to cope with FIVE major textile or apparel layoffs in the last two years.

Locally-- eleven hundred people in Henry County lost their jobs at Tultex this week.
As part of its reorganization, Tultex is also closing facilities in South Boston, Roanoke and Martinsville.

V-M-I's board of visitors will vote in February on a policy that would tighten down on the way college funds are used.

During an investigation earlier this year, a state auditor of public accounts found Superintendent Josiah Bunting used his discretionary account to pay for items such as alcohol, flowers and gifts.
Bunting was
later cleared of wrongdoing.
But an audit committee at the school
has been working on a new spending policy that would allow Bunting
to buy alcohol for functions, but not use his discretionary fund for purchases--- such as flowers or retirement parties

Roanoke City Police are searching for the man who robbed and shot 39 year old Chester Wright of Salem.
It happened on the 2500 block of Delta Drive in Roanoke last night.
Apparently an armed man approached Wright and demanded money.
Police say the two struggled and Wright tried to run-- but was shot in the back.
He was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and is listed in serious condition.

About 30 Roanoke City Police officers were out until three A-M, cracking down on drunk drivers and anyone else disobeying the law.

The crack- down started around 10-30 last night on tenth street.
Of the 500 vehicles that crossed the bridge -- 70 were detained.
Three drivers were arrested for D-U-I.
Two tickets were also issued for habitual offenders.
Other tickets were handed out for seat belt violations and others for suspended licenses.
The Roanoke City Police Department received a 22-thousand dollar federal and state grant to pay the officers over time to run the check point.
