The day is remembered for Japan's surprise aerial attack on the U-S naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
On the eve of the raid, Japanese Prime Minister Tojo informed the emperor that Japan would go to war against the United States.
The next morning, some 360 Japanese carrier-based warplanes took off for Pearl Harbor. A U-S Army Private noticed the planes on his radar screen, but he was told to disregard them since the base was expecting a flight of B-17's from the U-S mainland.
