A new device could one day offer hope to the many Americans who suffer from depression.
Currently only half of those people respond to therapy or drugs.
But doctors are testing a device that uses electricity to alleviate its symptoms.

The device is similar to a pacemaker. It delivers relief by sending impulses to the central nevous system and brain.
It is connected to the vagusn (VAY-GUS) nerve in the neck, which conducts electricity to the areas in the brain associated with depression.
It's not clear why or how it works, and it doesn't work for everyone.
And the benefits are not immediate.
